If you use a Samsung phone, the app may also have been put to sleep by the phone’s battery settings; open it on your phone, then check the car’s App Launcher again. A white-square icon is a different problem: Google’s guidance does not identify a universal cause or fix for it.
First, identify what is missing
- The app has never appeared: Check that it is compatible with Android Auto. Having it installed on your phone is not enough.
- The app used to appear, and you have a Samsung phone: Check whether the phone temporarily disabled it because it had not been used recently.
- The app appears as a white square: Treat this as a display issue separate from an app disappearing. The available reports do not establish a general fix.
- Android Auto itself will not connect: Troubleshoot setup and connection requirements separately. A connection problem is not the same as an app missing from the launcher.
If the app never appeared, check compatibility
Android Auto shows apps that support the car interface, not every app installed on your phone. Check Google’s compatible apps information. If the app should be compatible but still does not appear, contact its developer for app-specific help.

For a media app, Google recommends signing in on the phone before starting Android Auto. Some services may also require a subscription or premium account to access their content; that is a service-access requirement, not a way to restore an app icon.

Google says Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. In that case, the app can still be installed on the phone but be absent from Android Auto’s launcher.

- Open the missing app on your phone.
- Open Android Auto’s App Launcher on the car display again. Google says the app should then appear.
- To help prevent the phone from doing this again, open the phone’s battery settings and turn off the unused-app setting. Depending on the device, it may be called “Auto disable unused apps” or “Put unused apps to sleep.”
- If you cannot find the setting, ask Samsung for directions for your phone model.

Make sure you are looking in the App Launcher
Google calls the car-display list of available Android Auto apps the App Launcher. Use that screen to find apps rather than relying on the dashboard or recent-app area. Google’s screen guide explains the interface.

If an icon is a white square
A 2024 Android Auto Community thread describes icons appearing inside white squares both in the phone-side launcher customization screen and on the car display. The discussion does not establish a cause or confirm a fix, so it is not evidence that a particular reset or accessory will solve the problem.

- Phone make and model, Android version, and country
- App name and version, plus Android Auto version
- Car or head-unit make and model
- Google Play services version and any error message
These are the details requested by an Android Auto Team Community Specialist in that community discussion. Seek help from the app developer or relevant device support with those details. Google’s documented missing-app guidance does not prescribe clearing a cache, reinstalling the app, replacing a cable, or factory-resetting a device for white-square icons.
Keep connection problems separate from missing icons
Google says Android Auto is integrated into phones, so a separate Android Auto phone-app download is not required. Its setup guidance lists an Android 9.0 or later phone, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable for wired projection. Wireless projection has its own phone, Wi-Fi, and car or stereo compatibility requirements.
Those are connection and setup requirements. The setup page does not identify a USB cable as a fix for missing app icons when Android Auto is already running.
