Buying an Xbox game disc does not automatically give you a separate digital copy or a free upgrade to a newer-console version. The result depends on the game, the upgrade program, your console’s disc drive, and the publisher’s terms. Xbox’s Smart Delivery and its newer disc-to-digital entitlement test are separate options with separate eligibility rules.
Why a disc does not guarantee a digital upgrade
A disc purchase normally gives you access through that physical disc; it does not, by itself, grant a separate digital license. Nor does owning an Xbox One disc automatically entitle you to a newer-console edition. The game must support the particular upgrade route, and the route’s requirements still apply.

Xbox says Smart Delivery is available only in participating games. Developers and publishers decide whether to implement it, including for physical discs. A game supporting Smart Delivery therefore does not establish that every edition or disc qualifies. Xbox’s Smart Delivery announcement explains the feature and its developer-dependent disc support.
Which upgrade path are you trying to use?
| Path | What it can provide | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Delivery | The best version for a supported Xbox console, at no extra cost, where the game implements Smart Delivery. | Whether the exact game and disc edition support it, and whether your console can read the disc. |
| Publisher-announced upgrade | A newer-console version under the publisher’s stated terms; cost and eligibility depend on that offer. | Whether the offer covers your disc edition, region, and console. |
| Xbox disc-to-digital entitlement test | A digital entitlement for supported discs through a feature Xbox announced for Xbox Insiders. | Whether you have access to the test and whether the exact title is supported. |
| Separate digital purchase | A digital license for the edition you buy. | Store edition, price, and any platform-specific features; disc ownership alone does not make this a free copy. |
Smart Delivery is not a universal disc conversion
Smart Delivery is a supported-game feature, not a promise that every Xbox One disc converts to a digital Series X|S game. Xbox’s 2020 announcement says physical discs can support Smart Delivery when the developer or publisher implements it. The game’s own listing and publisher terms are more useful than assuming an upgrade exists because another game offers one.

- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
Xbox’s Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time listing illustrates the hardware caveat: for that title, an Xbox One disc owner needs an Xbox Series X to download or play the optimized version. The listing says an Xbox Series S owner cannot receive that no-cost disc-based upgrade. This is an example for that game, not a blanket rule for every title.
Xbox’s disc-to-digital entitlement test is a separate feature
Xbox announced on August 26, 2026, that Insiders could begin testing a feature on August 31 that lets players claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launching the game. Xbox said the initial catalog included thousands of titles, with more to be added, and cautioned that not every title would be available at launch. The announcement does not provide a complete eligible-title list, so a disc cannot be assumed to qualify. Read Xbox’s announcement and test details.

The feature’s digital benefits are also title-dependent. Xbox says supported games may offer benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming; the entitlement does not mean every game gains PC, cloud, or transferable access. Check the individual game’s terms rather than treating the test as a universal conversion of disc ownership.

Check your exact game and console
- Identify the precise edition. Note the game title, edition, and region printed on the disc or packaging; upgrade offers can be edition-specific.
- Read the Xbox Store listing. Look for Smart Delivery or explicit wording about a free upgrade, then check any console and disc conditions. The Crash Bandicoot 4 listing is an example of explicit terms, not a template for other games.
- Check the publisher’s upgrade policy. Confirm that it covers your disc version and intended console. A general statement that a game has an upgrade does not prove your copy qualifies.
- For the disc-to-digital test, verify both access and title support. Xbox announced it for Insiders and supported games; the launch announcement did not promise coverage for every disc.
- Make sure your console can read the disc. A disc-free console cannot use a disc as proof of ownership. In Xbox’s Crash Bandicoot 4 example, the Series S does not qualify for that no-cost disc upgrade.
What to do if no upgrade is offered
If the exact listing and publisher terms do not include your disc edition, there is no basis to expect a free digital copy or upgrade. Your practical choices are to keep playing from the disc on compatible hardware, use a supported upgrade route if one applies, or buy the digital edition separately. A disc-drive console can read a disc, but it cannot make an unsupported title eligible for an upgrade.
