macOS already includes the tools needed to connect to SSH servers and configure tunnels. A visual manager is optional: it can make saved host settings and active forwards easier to inspect, but it does not replace OpenSSH. The available product information does not establish the author’s personal reason for building SSH Config Manager, so this article explains the practical case for this kind of app without inventing a development story.
What macOS already offers
Apple documents connecting to servers from Terminal, as well as a graphical New Remote Connection flow in Terminal. OpenSSH also lets you save per-host client settings in ~/.ssh/config, so you can reuse connection details rather than type them for every session. See Apple’s Terminal guide and the OpenSSH ssh_config(5) manual.

That configuration file can hold host-specific options, including a route through a jump host using ProxyJump. The SSH client and server still do the underlying connection work; a graphical editor is an interface for managing settings, not a prerequisite for SSH.
What the three common tunnel types do
OpenSSH documents three common port-forwarding modes. Which one fits depends on where the service is reachable and which side should expose a listening port.

- Local forwarding (
LocalForward, often-L): opens a TCP port on your Mac and carries connections through SSH to a destination reachable from the remote side. - Remote forwarding (
RemoteForward, often-R): opens a port on the remote machine and carries connections through the secure channel toward a destination on the local side. Server policy can restrict this forwarding. - Dynamic forwarding (
DynamicForward, often-D): opens a local listener that can act as a SOCKS proxy, letting applications select destinations through that proxy.
These are OpenSSH behaviors, not independent test results for any particular manager. Options can vary by installed OpenSSH version; consult the ssh_config(5) manual on the Mac you use.
Where a visual manager may help
A dedicated interface can make a growing set of hosts, jump routes, keys, and forwards easier to review than a text file alone. It may also give a clearer view of whether a tunnel is active and make repeated changes less error-prone for someone who prefers forms or a graphical overview. Those are reasons to consider an interface, not evidence that one is necessary.

The Mac App Store listing for SSH Config Manager advertises both visual and raw-text editing of ~/.ssh/config, local, remote, and dynamic tunnels, multiple forwards per connection, multi-hop ProxyJump, agent and private-key authentication, host-key verification, tunnel health monitoring and reconnect behavior, and version history. These are publisher claims; they have not been independently verified here. The listing also says the app is sandboxed and accesses ~/.ssh after permission is granted; that privacy description is likewise the publisher’s.
A user evaluating the app should check whether its current behavior matches the needed workflow, especially how it edits the standard OpenSSH file, handles keys and host-key verification, and manages tunnel persistence. The listing is not a comparative survey of SSH managers, so it does not establish that this app is better than alternatives.

Using your Mac as an SSH client is not Remote Login
Connecting outward from a Mac to another SSH server is different from enabling SSH access into the Mac. Apple’s Remote Login setting makes the Mac available as a remote-login target; Apple warns, “Allowing remote login to your Mac can make it less secure.” Read Apple’s Remote Login guidance before enabling it. That warning concerns allowing access to your Mac, not ordinary outbound SSH connections from it.

Who benefits—and who may not
- A manager may be useful if you regularly maintain multiple host configurations or tunnels and want a visual way to inspect them.
- Terminal and the standard config may be enough if you have a small number of connections and are comfortable editing text and running SSH commands.
- Before relying on any manager, confirm its current support for the OpenSSH options, authentication methods, and tunnel behavior your setup requires. The product listing alone does not establish reliability or security performance.
