You can generate music on your own computer, but there is no single “local AI music studio” setup: requirements depend on the model, and a desktop app may still send work to the cloud. For a practical local-first build, choose a model first, check its current hardware and license requirements, then install a compatible interface and download the model files. ACE-Step 1.5 is one route for full-song generation; MusicGen and Stable Audio 3.0 offer different controls and compute trade-offs.

What “local AI music studio” means

A genuinely local workflow runs inference on your computer rather than sending prompts or audio to a provider’s generation API. That can keep those inputs within your machine or network, but only if the specific app and workflow avoid cloud services. Stability AI describes self-hosting as keeping prompts and generated audio inside the user’s infrastructure, in contrast to API processing; those statements apply to the deployments it describes, not every audio tool (Stability AI’s deployment comparison).

“Desktop app” does not automatically mean offline. ACE Studio’s installation documentation says an internet connection is required and describes cloud rendering as well as Turbo Mode, which uses the computer’s compute. It is therefore a desktop option, but not evidence of an entirely offline workflow (ACE Studio installation documentation).

ACE-Step 1.5 The project’s musician guide describes local generation of full songs with vocals. The guide is GPU-oriented and provides hardware tiers; requirements depend on the chosen model variant. Check the precise model and installation route. Its guide’s storage estimates are specific to its described setup.
ACE-Step Studio A third-party desktop interface for ACE-Step 1.5; its repository describes Windows installer and portable-folder routes. The repository describes offline use on supported NVIDIA cards and model tiers from 3.1 GB to 18.5 GB. Confirm active release and card/backend support. The project says the studio, acestep.cpp, and ACE-Step 1.5/models use MIT, but optional fine-tunes and assets can carry other terms.
MusicGen Meta documentation lists small (300M), medium (1.5B), melody (1.5B), large (3.3B), and melody-large (3.3B) variants. It supports text and melody-conditioned workflows, depending on variant. Documentation recommends 16 GB of memory for its best quality/compute trade-off; smaller GPUs can generate short sequences or use the small model. This is not a universal VRAM minimum. Its documentation supports local use with a GPU. It does not establish a general full-song vocal workflow.
Stable Audio 3.0 Stability AI describes Small and Small-SFX for output up to 120 seconds; Medium is a larger CUDA-based option. Large is not included in the open-weight release described by the company. Small and Small-SFX are described as CPU-capable; Medium uses CUDA and Flash Attention 2. Stability AI reports 6.52 GB peak VRAM for one 380-second Medium track on an H200, not as a general requirement for other machines. The company describes open-weight Community License availability for three variants. Its terms and revenue conditions matter; Large is accessed by API or enterprise self-hosting.
ACE Studio Windows and macOS desktop software with cloud rendering and a Turbo Mode that uses local compute, according to its docs. Its documentation lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later and macOS Ventura 13 or later. Internet is required, so verify which render route is used before treating it as local-first.

Plan storage and compute around the model

Disk space

The ACE-Step musician guide estimates about 100 GB free disk space for its described setup and says automatically downloaded model files total around 60 GB. Treat those as guide-specific estimates, not the install size for every interface or model. ACE-Step Studio separately lists model tiers between 3.1 GB and 18.5 GB in its repository; the specific model selection changes the download requirement.

MusicGen documents a different workload: its 16 GB memory recommendation is for the best quality/compute trade-off, while smaller GPUs can handle shorter sequences or the small model. The documentation does not label this a universal 16 GB VRAM floor.

For Stable Audio 3.0, Stability AI describes Small and Small-SFX as 433M-parameter, CPU-capable models; Medium is 1.4B parameters and uses CUDA with Flash Attention 2. The company says absent or misconfigured Flash Attention 2 can produce unusable output. Its reported 6.52 GB peak VRAM figure refers specifically to Medium generating a 380-second track on an H200, not a general desktop target.

Performance figures need their conditions

The ACE-Step 1.5 paper reports generation in under 2 seconds per full song on an A100 and under 10 seconds on an RTX 3090. These are the paper authors’ reported results, not independent tests of other PCs. They should not be compared directly with Stable Audio or AMD figures as if the systems, durations, and test conditions matched (ACE-Step 1.5 paper).

A practical local-first setup sequence

  1. Pick the output you need. If you want a full song with vocals, start by checking ACE-Step 1.5’s musician guide. For text or melody-conditioned generation with documented model sizes, review MusicGen’s variants. For CPU-capable short music or sound-effect generation, inspect Stable Audio 3.0 Small and Small-SFX.
  2. Check your machine against that exact route. Verify GPU model and memory, operating system, model variant, and any required runtime or attention library in the current project documentation. Do not use a GPU tier from one project as a guarantee for another.
  3. Reserve storage before downloading. For the ACE-Step guide’s described setup, plan around its estimate of 100 GB free space. For a smaller ACE-Step Studio model or another runtime, check the active release’s actual model downloads rather than assuming that estimate applies.
  4. Install the model and interface from their maintained project pages. ACE-Step Studio’s repository documents Windows installer and portable-folder routes; AMD documents a separate ComfyUI and ROCm route for supported Radeon/Ryzen AI platforms. Use the instructions for the chosen platform and confirm current supported hardware (ACE-Step Studio; AMD’s ACE-Step 1.5 ComfyUI/ROCm guide).
  5. Confirm the render path is actually local. Check whether the app is using a downloaded model and local compute rather than an API or cloud-render option. For ACE Studio, its docs require internet and distinguish cloud rendering from Turbo Mode.
  6. Generate a short test before a long session. Use a modest prompt or short output first, then confirm the result is produced by the intended model and that the application reports no missing runtime components. The cited sources do not establish a universal prompt, quality threshold, or generation time for all PCs.
  7. Check every asset’s license before distributing output. Keep a record of the exact model, fine-tune, LoRA, or other bundled assets used, because licenses may differ within one interface.

Local does not settle privacy or usage rights

Privacy depends on the render path

A local model can avoid sending prompts and generated audio to an API, but a hybrid application may still use network services. Stability AI’s comparison describes the distinction for its self-hosted and API deployments; ACE Studio’s docs, by contrast, require an internet connection and include cloud rendering. Check the specific application’s settings and documentation rather than inferring privacy from a desktop icon.

Open weights do not mean unrestricted commercial use

Stability AI’s September 9, 2026 article says Community License use is free for organizations below $1 million in annual revenue, states that users own outputs subject to the license and Acceptable Use Policy, and distinguishes enterprise terms and indemnification. These are the company’s descriptions of its terms, not legal advice; read the current license itself before commercial use (Stability AI deployment comparison).

The ACE-Step Studio repository identifies the studio, acestep.cpp, and ACE-Step 1.5/models as MIT, but lists Regrind fine-tune/VAE materials as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, MuScriptor weights as CC BY-NC 4.0, and catalog LoRAs as subject to each author’s license. Verify the exact weights and add-ons you use; the base project’s license does not automatically cover optional assets (ACE-Step Studio repository).

When a local studio is the right choice

  • Choose a local model workflow when keeping prompts and audio on your own infrastructure is important and you can meet the selected model’s compute and setup needs.
  • Consider a CPU-capable Stable Audio 3.0 Small variant if you need a supported path without a CUDA GPU, while checking the current model’s limits and license.
  • Use an internet-connected desktop product only if its cloud features and render routing fit your privacy and workflow requirements.
  • For AMD hardware, AMD documents an ACE-Step 1.5 route through ComfyUI and ROCm on supported platforms. Its speed and quality statements are vendor claims; the cited material does not provide an independent apples-to-apples comparison against NVIDIA systems (AMD’s guide).
