An old router can slow your network if its Wi-Fi standards, Ethernet ports or capacity cannot keep up with your broadband plan and connected devices. But slow Wi-Fi alone does not prove the router is at fault: the internet service, modem or ONT, device, signal strength, interference and cables can all be bottlenecks. Compare wired and wireless speeds first, then fix the cause you find.
How to tell whether the router is the bottleneck
Run a speed test near the router, ideally on more than one device. If possible, compare Wi-Fi with a test using Ethernet. Check results against your broadband plan, allowing for the fact that a router cannot deliver more internet speed than the connection it receives. Router, device and service capabilities must all support the speed you expect. NETGEAR explains common causes of lower-than-expected speeds; Linksys also recommends checking the connection path.

- Both wired and Wi-Fi are slow: Check the broadband service, modem or ONT, router’s WAN connection and Ethernet cable. If those checks do not explain the result, ask your internet provider to test the line.
- Ethernet is satisfactory but Wi-Fi is slow: Focus on the wireless band, distance, obstacles, interference and the Wi-Fi capability of the device.
A single test is only a snapshot. Repeat it in the same location and, where possible, compare another device so you can distinguish a network-wide problem from a limitation on one device.
Check the device and Wi-Fi band
A wireless connection is limited by both ends: an older phone or laptop cannot use Wi-Fi features its hardware does not support, even if the router has them. The band matters too. Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout describes how bands and obstacles affect connections.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better, but may be slower or more congested.
- 5 GHz can offer faster throughput nearby, but usually has shorter range and weaker obstacle penetration than 2.4 GHz.
- 6 GHz requires compatible router and client hardware, and is most useful at close range.
Try a compatible device on 5 GHz near the router to see whether its result improves. Do not move every device to the fastest band: some smart-home equipment supports only 2.4 GHz, and distance may make a longer-range band the better choice. Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers signal and device considerations.
Improve placement and reduce interference
Test close to the router, then compare with the slow location. A substantial difference points to coverage conditions rather than proving the router is defective. Distance, walls, cabinets and other obstructions can weaken Wi-Fi. Place the router in an open, central position when practical, away from avoidable obstructions.

Nearby Wi-Fi networks and household devices can also interfere. If you are comfortable changing wireless settings, check the router’s app or administration page for channel options. ASUS recommends checking firmware and channel settings; its channel-width guidance notes that available settings vary by country and firmware. If you are unsure, start with the router’s automatic or default settings rather than choosing arbitrary channels or channel widths.

Restart equipment and check for updates
- Restart the router and the device experiencing the problem, then repeat the speed test.
- Open the router’s app or administration page and check whether a firmware update is available. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- If the router came from your internet provider, ask whether updates are installed automatically. The Federal Trade Commission’s home Wi-Fi security guidance advises checking the manufacturer’s site for software updates and checking with the ISP about updates for provider-supplied equipment.
Firmware can improve stability and security, but it cannot increase the speed in your broadband plan or overcome a hardware limit. The FTC says, “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information,” referring to WPA3 and WPA2. Use an encryption option supported by your router and devices.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check Ethernet ports and cables when wired speed is low
If a wired test is also slow, inspect the router’s WAN and LAN port speeds and the link rate reported by the connected device, if available. Check that the cable is securely connected and not damaged. NETGEAR gives Cat5 cable as an example of a cable that may limit a connection to 100 Mbps. That is a reason to inspect the cable and link rate when wired performance is unexpectedly low—not a reason to replace a cable to solve a wireless-only range problem. NETGEAR’s troubleshooting page also discusses client standards and cable limits.

Consider a replacement when tests point to a router capability that falls short of your plan or devices, such as limited Wi-Fi generation, WAN or LAN port speed, or capacity; when important firmware and security updates are no longer offered; or when coverage remains inadequate after placement and configuration checks. There is no universal age at which every router should be replaced. The FTC recommends keeping router software updated, while Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance covers troubleshooting slow or unreliable service.

Before buying, confirm that the equipment is compatible with your provider and compare the features that matter to your home:
- WAN compatibility and Ethernet port speeds that match your broadband plan.
- Wi-Fi standards and bands supported by the router and your important devices.
- Home size, layout, obstacles and any persistent weak zones.
- Ongoing firmware and security update support.
- Provider setup and support requirements, plus the total cost.
A mesh system or access point can address a particular coverage gap; it does not increase the speed delivered by your ISP. Ofcom cautions that boosters can affect speed, so consider coverage gear only after identifying where the signal is weak.
