One may apply the orientation to the displayed pixels while the other ignores it—or a later step may apply it again. That is a diagnosis to check, not a confirmed cause for any particular upload.
Why the preview and saved image can disagree
A photo’s pixels are not always stored in the direction you see on screen. A phone or camera can save the pixel data in the sensor’s native orientation and include an EXIF Orientation value telling compatible software how to display it. Apple documents that UIImage applies the transform needed to display an image according to its orientation metadata.

That means an upright preview does not prove the underlying pixels have been rotated. The preview may honor the tag, while a server-side decoder or image-processing step may handle it differently. A pipeline might also remove the tag before applying its transform, preserve the tag after rotating the pixels, or apply the transform more than once. These are possibilities to investigate; without the original file and implementation, the particular cause is unknown.

How to find where the orientation changes
- Keep the exact original upload. Work from a copy so you can compare each stage with the source file.
- Inspect the file’s orientation and dimensions. ImageMagick’s identify command reports image attributes, and its image-property reference covers properties you can query. Record the format, pixel dimensions, and Orientation value if present.
- Check intermediate server outputs. Compare the image immediately after decoding, after any resize, crop, or rotation, and just before saving. At each stage, note both the pixel dimensions and whether Orientation metadata remains.
- Compare pixels, not just previews. Open the original, an intermediate output, and the saved file in an independent viewer. A display framework can use metadata while rendering, so a preview alone cannot establish the direction of the raw pixels.
- Repeat with the formats and client paths you support. EXIF Orientation is common in JPEG camera photos, but not every uploaded image or format carries that tag.
Normalize orientation once, before resizing or stripping metadata
Make orientation normalization an explicit step near the start of server-side processing: apply the metadata-directed transform to the pixels, then clear or update the orientation value so later software will not rotate those pixels again. Do this before stripping metadata, because removing the Orientation tag first can discard the information needed to correct the image. ImageMagick documents -auto-orient for applying orientation and notes that -orient only sets metadata; it does not alter the image itself.
Once normalized, run resizing, cropping, and encoding against the corrected pixels. If a client transforms the image before upload, check whether it also removes or resets the original orientation metadata. ImageMagick’s photo-handling guide cautions that decoding and re-encoding JPEG can reduce quality; when a pipeline already needs to resize or otherwise modify an image, combining operations in one processing pass where practical can avoid unnecessary re-encoding.

What to verify in an ImageMagick pipeline
Do not use -orient as if it rotated the pixels: ImageMagick says it “merely sets the orientation metadata, and does not change the image.” Use the appropriate auto-orientation operation when the goal is to apply the tag’s transform to the image. Confirm the exact syntax and behavior for the ImageMagick version deployed on your server.

The key invariant is that the saved pixels should already be in the intended display direction, and the saved metadata should not tell the next viewer to rotate them again. Whether the best implementation is a particular ImageMagick command or another library depends on the framework and processing path in use.
