Why an Espresso Machine Has Low Pressure—and How to Fix It

A low shot-pressure reading may come from coffee resistance, not a failed pump. Identify the symptom, check the basket and water supply, clean safely, and use model-specific tests before considering repairs.

A low pressure reading during a shot does not automatically mean the pump has failed. Brew pressure depends on resistance: coffee that lets water pass too freely can produce a low gauge reading even when the pump is working. First identify whether the problem is low pressure only during extraction, weak flow from the grouphead with no portafilter, or no water flow at all; each points to a different set of checks.

First identify what is actually low

Before changing settings or opening the machine, note what happens and when. A pressure gauge reading during extraction is not the same symptom as weak water flow from an empty grouphead.

  • Low pressure only during a shot: Check grind, dose, and puck preparation first. A fast-flowing puck may not provide enough resistance for pressure to build.
  • Weak grouphead flow with the portafilter removed: Suspect a restriction in the water supply, tubing, or machine, or a cleaning issue.
  • No water from the grouphead: Check the tank or plumbed supply and accessible blockages before suspecting a failed pump.
  • Hot water or steam still works: Note that difference; it can help narrow the fault, though it does not by itself prove the pump is healthy.

Also note whether the machine is tank-fed or plumbed and which gauge you are reading. A rotary-pump machine’s main gauge may show pump output, while a grouphead gauge shows pressure developing at the group. Those readings are not interchangeable. Clive Coffee’s brew-pressure guide explains why a gauge needs resistance to register brew pressure.

Fix shot pressure problems by checking the coffee first

Check the basket and dose

If water flows too quickly through the coffee, it may be a puck-preparation problem rather than a pump problem. If the basket is blocked, however, water may barely flow or stop altogether. Remove and rinse the basket, then check that its holes are open. Use the dose level indicated for the basket rather than overfilling it.

For La Specialista machines, De’Longhi lists a clogged filter basket, too much coffee, and coffee ground too fine among reasons brewing may stop. Its model-family guidance is to clean the basket, reduce an excessive dose, and try a coarser grind where appropriate. For other machines, follow the exact model manual rather than treating these La Specialista instructions as universal. See De’Longhi’s La Specialista FAQ.

Use backflush behavior as a clue, not a universal test

If a compatible machine builds pressure against a backflush blank but reads low during extraction, investigate grind and puck preparation before concluding that the pump is weak. The blank creates resistance without a coffee puck, so the result helps distinguish a machine that can build pressure from one that cannot. Use only the manufacturer-approved backflush procedure and equipment for your model.

Clean user-serviceable parts

Remove coffee residue from the parts the manual identifies as user-serviceable. Cleaning is a sensible first step for flow problems; Rocket Espresso recommends beginning there. If your machine supports backflushing, use only the approved method and a compatible cleaning powder or tablet, following the product and machine directions. A backflush cleaner is not a guaranteed fix and is not suitable for every machine. Rocket’s guidance is at Rocket Espresso UK’s flow troubleshooting FAQ.

Check the water source and accessible restrictions

  • Tank-fed machine: Confirm the reservoir has water and is seated correctly. Check that accessible inlet or return tubes are positioned as the manual specifies.
  • Plumbed machine: Check that the supply is on and that an inline filter or softener is not restricting flow. Rocket identifies a restrictive softener, kinked or pinched lines, and a stuck valve as possible flow causes.
  • Either type: Look for visible kinks or pinches in accessible tubing and confirm that the machine’s water path has not been disturbed during cleaning or maintenance.

Do not dismantle a hot or pressurized machine. If checking a line requires internal access, use the service instructions for the exact model or contact a qualified technician.

When a pump fault becomes more likely

A pump fault is more plausible when the machine cannot build pressure against an appropriate blank or during a model-specific test, after water supply, restrictions, cleaning, and leaks have been checked. A professional or model-specific service procedure may also test free grouphead flow and inspect valves for leakage.

Clive Coffee’s Slayer 1-Group guide illustrates this diagnostic sequence: it checks free grouphead flow, pump setting with a backflush blank, leakage at expansion and three-way valves, and inlet-water supply before identifying a failing pump as the likely remaining fault. Its figures and procedure apply to the Slayer 1-Group, not to espresso machines generally. The guide’s stated ideal inlet flow is 2 GPM, plus or minus 0.5 GPM, and its free-flow check is about 4 ounces in 10 seconds in full-brew mode. Do not use those numbers as pass/fail thresholds for another model. See Clive Coffee’s Slayer 1-Group troubleshooting guide.

Why a pressure number alone can mislead

Clive Coffee’s guide to vibratory-pump machines describes 9 bar / 130 psi as a commercial standard for the machines it discusses, not a universal target for every machine or gauge. The same guide offers about 10 seconds to reach 9 bar while backflushing as a troubleshooting cue for a vibratory pump, not a universal pump-life threshold. Gauge location, pump type, model, and test conditions all matter. Check the maker’s manual before adjusting pressure or interpreting a reading.

Choose the next step by symptom

What you observe First checks What the result suggests
Low gauge reading during a shot, but normal flow without the portafilter Check grind, dose, basket, and puck preparation Water may be passing through the puck too freely; a low shot reading alone does not establish pump failure.
Weak flow from the grouphead without the portafilter Clean user-serviceable parts; check tank seating, supply, filters or softener, and accessible tubing A restriction or cleaning issue is more directly relevant than puck preparation.
No grouphead flow Check water availability and accessible supply issues; consult the manual for priming or cleaning steps If the supply is clear and approved cleaning does not help, model-specific diagnosis is needed.
Pressure builds on a compatible backflush blank but is low only during extraction Revisit grind and puck preparation The machine can build pressure under that test condition; this does not guarantee every component is fault-free.

When to stop and get service

Do not replace a pump or valve based on a low shot gauge reading alone. Internal pump, valve, wiring, or pressure-adjustment work should follow the exact service manual and compatibility requirements. If the required test involves opening the machine, or supply and cleaning checks do not restore flow, use a qualified espresso-machine technician.
