Hard water can leave mineral scale inside water circuits, but there is no reliable cross-brand schedule: water hardness, filter use, and the machine’s design all affect maintenance. Descaling also does not replace routine coffee-residue cleaning or any separate backflush cycle.
Descaling, cleaning, and backflushing are different jobs
Descaling addresses mineral buildup
Hard water contains minerals that can accumulate as scale in a machine’s water circuits. Breville says scale may reduce brewing flow, brewing temperature, machine power, and espresso taste in its BES880 instruction manual. Descaling uses a solution and procedure intended for that buildup; it is not a general-purpose cleaning cycle.

Cleaning removes coffee residue
Coffee oils and grounds need their own care routine. A cleaning tablet or cleaning cycle, when the machine calls for one, should not be treated as a substitute for descaler. On the Breville BES880, the prompted cleaning cycle is a backflushing cycle and is separate from descaling.

Backflushing sends water through a machine’s group-head path, typically using the method specified by its manufacturer. Whether your machine permits or requires it depends on its design. Follow the manual rather than assuming every espresso machine should be backflushed.

When should you descale?
Start with the machine’s alert or the schedule in its manual. If your model lets you configure a descaling rate based on water hardness, test your water and enter the result as directed. De’Longhi’s UK guidance for Dedica and Dedica Arte and La Specialista Opera says frequency depends on local water hardness and recommends testing it and setting the machine’s descaling rate accordingly.
A filter may reduce mineral buildup, but it does not automatically eliminate descaling. For the BES880, Breville says its included filter reduces the need to descale and gives a replacement interval of three months or 40 L under the specified conditions. The manual says the 40 L limit is based on hardness level 4 and permits a longer amount at level 2. Those figures apply to that model’s guidance, not to other machines.

Choose a descaler approved for your exact model
Find the manual for your make and model before buying a descaler. Check that the product is approved, whether the machine needs a particular formulation, and whether the instructions include any warning about other acids or household substitutes. Compatibility matters more than a generic claim that a product works for espresso machines.
- Philips 5000 series: Philips’ cited 5000-series descaling instructions call for Philips descaler and warn against sulfuric, hydrochloric, sulfamic, and acetic acid (vinegar). Philips states: “Do not use products that contain sulfuric, hydrochloric, sulfamic, or acetic acid (vinegar). These damage the machine and void the warranty.” This warning is specific to the cited Philips procedure.
- De’Longhi La Specialista Opera: De’Longhi’s cited UK procedure recommends EcoDecalk and warns that an unsuitable product or incorrect procedure may cause faults not covered by its guarantee. Use that advice for the named model, not as a universal brand or product rule.
Do not assume vinegar is safe because it is a familiar household acid, or that a descaler recommended for one manufacturer is suitable for another. Check the current manual and product compatibility for your model.

Follow the machine’s complete descaling procedure
Use the exact sequence in your model’s manual or on-screen prompts. Steps can differ in solution quantity, tank setup, milk-system preparation, removable filters, container placement, and rinsing. As examples of that variation, Philips’ cited 5000-series procedure takes about 30 minutes, while De’Longhi’s La Specialista Opera procedure takes around 20 minutes; neither duration applies to all machines.
- Identify the exact model. Use its manual or the manufacturer’s support page, not a procedure for a similar-looking machine.
- Prepare the machine as directed. Follow instructions for the water tank, milk system, removable filter, and containers. Do not leave a filter in place or remove it unless the procedure tells you what to do.
- Add only the approved solution in the specified amount. Do not mix products or substitute a household cleaner.
- Run the prompted cycle without skipping steps. Stay with the machine if the procedure requires you to respond to prompts or refill the tank.
- Complete every rinse and reset step. A descaling cycle is not complete until the machine’s prescribed rinsing and any final confirmation or reset are done.
Build a routine around your machine type
For super-automatic machines
Use the machine’s alerts and manual for descaling, brew-group cleaning, and any automatic cleaning programs. Gaggia North America’s super-automatic maintenance guidance recommends regularly emptying the drip tray and dreg drawer and describes brew-group cleaning and automatic descale cycles where available. The exact tasks and timing still depend on the model.

What to check before buying maintenance supplies
- Confirm the product is approved for your exact make and model.
- Distinguish descaler from espresso-machine cleaning tablets; they serve different maintenance tasks.
- Check whether your machine uses a water filter and find its model-specific replacement instructions.
- Look for instructions about water hardness settings, rinsing, and warranty coverage.
- Buy replacement filters only when they are specified as compatible with your machine.
Manufacturer guidance can change, and this overview covers selected models rather than every machine or region. For a specific machine, its current manual and manufacturer support instructions are the controlling source.
