If an electric weed eater stops feeding line, the usual causes are an empty or badly seated spool, tangled or incorrectly wound line, debris in the head, or using the wrong feed method. Unplug a corded trimmer or remove the battery before opening the head, then identify whether it uses a bump-feed, automatic-feed, or fixed-line system. The right line size and loading steps depend on the exact model.
Start safely and identify the feed head
Switch off and unplug a corded trimmer. For a cordless model, remove the battery. Wait for the cutting head to stop completely, place the trimmer on a stable surface, and wear gloves when handling the spool. Do not inspect or adjust the head while the tool is powered.

Check the model label and manual before opening the head. A bump-feed head advances line when operated in the manner specified for that model; an automatic-feed head advances line during operation without the same bump action; a fixed-line head may require manual replacement rather than feeding line from a spool. Applying the wrong method can make a working head seem faulty. For example, BLACK+DECKER’s AFS system feeds automatically and does not require bumping or pressing a button, while some models have different instructions. Diagnose the spool, line, and head
- Confirm the correct feed method. Follow the model manual’s instructions for advancing line. MTD’s guidance for its bump heads says to bump while the head is spinning at or near full rpm and to keep enough line out for the mechanism to advance it. That method is not universal, and automatic-feed models should not be bumped unless their manual says to do so. See MTD’s bump-head guidance.
- Check whether line is present and the spool is seated. With power isolated, open the head as directed by the manual. An empty, poorly fitted, worn, or faulty spool can prevent feeding. Toro lists an out-of-line spool among the causes when its bump head does not advance line; replace worn parts only with a compatible spool. See the Toro operator manual.
- Look for tangles or crossed winding. If line is tangled, trapped, or wound across itself, unwind it and reload it in the direction shown on the spool or in the manual. Keep the strands in their correct tracks; MTD says its two strands should remain in separate top and bottom reel tracks. Toro recommends removing the bump-head cover and untangling line trapped in the housing.
- Check line specification and spool format. Use the line diameter, type, and spool format stated for your trimmer. Yard Force identifies incorrect line type or diameter as a possible cause on cordless models. Do not assume line or a spool that fits one electric trimmer will fit another. Yard Force’s cordless guidance and Troy-Bilt’s refill guidance explain why loading details are model-specific.
- Clear debris from the feed path. With the battery removed or the tool unplugged, clear grass and other debris from the spool housing and inspect the line exit points. Toro lists debris under the guard or in the bump-head housing as a possible cause of feed failure.
- Consider heat-stuck line or a damaged mechanism. MTD notes that operating for a prolonged time with very short line can allow heat to build; line may soften and stick to itself after cooling. Check for freely moving parts and visible wear, but do not force or dismantle a damaged mechanism. Yard Force advises seeking support if the problem persists; BLACK+DECKER says a broken pin on an automatic spool’s actuating lever can require service-center repair.
Reload or replace line the right way
If the spool is empty, tangled, or incorrectly wound, reload it only if the model supports bulk-line refills. Follow the manual or the markings on the spool for line diameter, winding direction, strand arrangement, and how much line to load. If it uses a prewound spool, or the existing spool is worn or damaged, use an OEM or explicitly compatible replacement for the exact trimmer model. Do not guess at a universal line diameter or spool size; the manufacturers’ guidance does not establish one size that fits all electric trimmers.

Reinstall the spool and head components in the order shown in the manual, making sure the line ends pass through the correct eyelets and are not trapped under the cover. Close the head securely before restoring power. Test the feed only in the way the model’s instructions specify. Yard Force provides separate electric-trimmer feed troubleshooting and cordless-trimmer feed guidance.
When to stop troubleshooting
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center if the housing is cracked, the feed mechanism is visibly damaged, a spool component is broken, or the line still will not advance after you have checked the feed method, fit, winding, line specification, and debris. Avoid forcing a stuck head or improvising replacement parts; a model-compatible component or professional repair is safer than further disassembly.
