If DDR5 is reporting a lower speed than the number on the kit, first check the reading and its units, then confirm what your processor and motherboard support. Many kits start at a conservative default; on a compatible system, enabling the right Intel XMP or AMD EXPO profile may apply the kit’s advertised settings. If the profile will not boot reliably, return to defaults and check compatibility, slot placement, and firmware before trying again.
Why DDR5 may run below its advertised speed
The number printed on a memory kit usually describes a supported profile, not necessarily the setting used on the first boot. Intel explains that a motherboard commonly reads the module’s SPD data during startup and that its programmed default may be lower than the vendor-marketed value to support wider compatibility. Intel’s frequency guidance explains the distinction.

The profile also has to work with the complete system. Your processor, motherboard, BIOS, number of DIMMs, and module arrangement all affect which settings are supported and achievable. The kit’s label alone does not guarantee that every computer will run it at that rate.
Make sure the speed reading means what you think it means
Check the memory speed in BIOS/UEFI and, if useful, compare it with a reputable system-information utility. Record both the displayed number and its unit. Memory data rate may be described in MT/s, while some software or firmware labels readings differently; compare like units rather than concluding that a factor-of-two difference proves a fault. There is no single display convention established for every Windows utility.

- Check whether the utility reports a data rate or a differently labeled clock value.
- Use the CPU and motherboard documentation to identify the supported settings for your exact configuration.
Check the CPU, motherboard, and memory configuration
Before changing BIOS settings, identify the exact processor and motherboard models. Check the processor’s specifications, the motherboard manual, and the board’s memory QVL (qualified-vendor list) for the kit, DIMM count, and intended slots. AMD also maintains a Ryzen-compatible memory list; its entries describe tested kits and their rated speed and latency, including EXPO/XMP compatibility.
Confirm the DIMM slots and seating
For two modules, use the pair of slots specified in the motherboard manual—not necessarily two adjacent slots. Make sure each DIMM is fully seated. AMD recommends using the board’s recommended slots and a supported profile, and advises using modules from a single kit. See AMD’s memory troubleshooting guidance.

Avoid mixing separate kits
Modules bought separately, even if they share a model name or advertised speed, are not guaranteed to work together at the same profile. Use DIMMs sold as one matched kit where possible. Intel specifically warns that mixing part numbers in a channel can reduce speed or prevent boot on 600-series motherboards with 12th-generation Core processors; that warning is scoped to those systems, not a universal speed rule for every platform. Intel’s DIMM guidance covers that case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEnable the memory profile in BIOS/UEFI
XMP and EXPO are profile-based memory overclocking technologies. Intel describes XMP profiles as predefined and tested settings that can be loaded through BIOS or a tuning application. EXPO is AMD’s DDR5 overclocking technology for Socket AM5. Use a profile only when the CPU, motherboard, and memory support it; menu names and locations vary by manufacturer, so consult the board manual.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
- Restart the computer and enter BIOS/UEFI using the key shown during startup or in the motherboard manual.
- Find the memory or overclocking settings. The exact menu name varies by board and BIOS version.
- On a compatible Intel system, select a supported Intel XMP profile. On a supported AMD AM5 system, select a supported EXPO profile.
- Save changes and restart. Recheck the reported speed and unit after the system boots.
- Check stability under your normal workload; a successful boot by itself does not prove that the profile is stable.
For details on profile behavior and compatibility, see Intel’s XMP guidance and AMD’s EXPO page.
If the profile fails or the system becomes unstable
Do not compensate by guessing at timings or raising voltage. Return to a known-stable configuration first, then work through the checks below.

- Restore optimized defaults or otherwise return the memory settings to their default values. If the system cannot reach BIOS, use the motherboard manual’s recovery or CMOS-reset procedure.
- Check the board manufacturer’s support page for a suitable BIOS update. Follow its instructions; firmware-update steps are specific to the board.
- Power down, reseat the DIMMs, and confirm they are in the recommended slots.
- Compare the exact kit and DIMM population with the motherboard QVL or compatibility list.
- Retry only a profile supported by the complete system. If instability continues, use a lower supported speed or ask the system or motherboard vendor for guidance.
AMD’s guidance recommends correct seating, the recommended slots, and a supported BIOS profile. Intel and AMD both warn that memory overclocking can carry stability and warranty implications: Intel notes that frequency or voltage changes can affect warranty and stability, while AMD warns that overclocking or undervolting outside published specifications carries hardware and data risks and can affect warranties. See the vendor guidance for AMD troubleshooting, Intel XMP, and AMD EXPO.
When replacing the memory kit makes sense
Consider a replacement only after checking the current settings, physical installation, and compatibility. A new kit cannot override the processor or motherboard’s limits. Compare these factors against the exact system configuration:
