An external GPU can triple frame rates in the right setup, especially when it replaces very weak integrated graphics and the game is limited by GPU performance. But three times the FPS is a possible result, not a typical or guaranteed one: your laptop’s processor, existing graphics, connection, game, settings, and display path all matter.
When an eGPU can make frame rates soar
An eGPU setup pairs a laptop with a compatible connection, an enclosure, and a desktop graphics card. The enclosure connects the card to the laptop; depending on the model, it may also provide power delivery and additional ports. HP outlines the basic arrangement in its eGPU guide.

The biggest potential gains come when the laptop’s built-in graphics are the main obstacle. If a game is struggling because integrated graphics cannot render frames fast enough, a much more capable desktop GPU can remove that bottleneck. The improvement can be dramatic—but only if the rest of the system can keep up.

That is why “triple” should be read as a conditional example, not a general eGPU performance promise. There is no universal multiplier for external graphics. The available 2024 Notebookcheck review of the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 4090 Gaming Box reports results by game, resolution, and settings, with varying differences rather than one broadly applicable uplift.

Why the same eGPU can produce very different results
The starting graphics matter
Replacing basic integrated graphics has more headroom for improvement than supplementing a laptop that already has a capable discrete GPU. The laptop’s existing graphics chip and its power limit affect the comparison, so “eGPU versus laptop graphics” is incomplete unless the starting hardware is identified.
The processor and game can become the bottleneck
A fast graphics card cannot raise frame rates indefinitely if the laptop’s CPU or the game engine is limiting performance. The Tom’s Hardware report on a specific RTX 4090 enclosure test flags CPU mismatch as a caveat, which is a reminder not to attribute every difference between a laptop and desktop result to the eGPU connection.

- SFF-8611 Male to Male Cable: Ultra-thin & flexible design (0.5mm thickness) with premium aesthetics, eliminating port damage risks from rigid traditional OCuLink cables. Flat cable architecture with full-coverage shielding and advanced EMI materials to minimize interference and performance degradation
- Compatible Graphics Cards: Compatible with graphics cards of various sizes like RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX etc., no need to worry about graphics card length restrictions. 🔺Compatible Power Supply: Compatible with standard ATX power supply ONLY, dual screw mounting (top & bottom) for PSU stability
- Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
The connection limits how the card communicates
Thunderbolt 3 is specified at 40 Gbps. HP describes its eGPU connection as using four PCIe 3.0 lanes and compares that with a desktop PCIe x16 slot, characterizing the four lanes as 25% of the slot’s bandwidth. These are interface-level comparisons, not a forecast that an eGPU will lose a fixed share of FPS.

In a specific Thunderbolt 3 enclosure feature test summarized by Tom’s Hardware, the reported PCI Express bandwidth was 2.33 GB/s. That result describes that test and enclosure; it is not a guaranteed bandwidth figure for every eGPU or a direct conversion to gaming performance.

The display route changes the traffic path
With an external monitor connected to the eGPU, rendered frames can go directly from the graphics card to that display. If you use the laptop’s built-in screen, frames need to travel back across the host connection to reach it. That return traffic can affect performance, but the available sources do not establish a fixed gain from switching to an external monitor.
How to judge an eGPU benchmark fairly
A headline FPS multiplier is useful only when the comparison says what was tested. To evaluate a claimed result, look for these details:

- Compatible graphics cards: Any GPU with available drivers on the official NVIDIA or AMD websites can be used. For NVIDIA, this ranges from the top-end RTX 5090 all the way down to the GTX 450. The same applies to AMD graphics cards. (Do not recommend Graphics Cards with Intel)
- Compatible devices: Most Windows10/11/Linux -based laptop, desktop, or console (including the Lenovo Legion Go) with a Thunderbolt port and an Intel/AMD processor can be used (some console with USB4 may require a BIOS update to enable USB4 functionality), Compatible with USB4, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4
- Transfer speed: The device uses the JHL6340 controller, delivering speeds around 22Gbps, compatible with both Win10 and Win11—offering better stability. Perfect for graphics work, video editing, AI art, and AAA gaming
- Flexible 4 power input options (choose one): CPU (4+4-pin), Molex, PD 3.0 (12V Max 60W), or DC5521 (12V Max 120W)
- Packing Includes: PCIE 3.0 x16 eGPU Dock withThunderbolt Port, High-quality Standard Thunderbolt 4 Cable (23.6 inch), a 24Pin Power Jumper Cable
- Starting system: the laptop model and whether its baseline is integrated or discrete graphics.
- eGPU setup: the graphics card, enclosure, host connection, and any measured bandwidth.
- Workload: the game, resolution, graphics settings, and relevant game or test conditions.
- Display route: whether the display was connected to the eGPU or was the laptop’s internal screen.
- Performance measure: average FPS as well as low-percentile frame rates, frame-time consistency, and stutter where reported.
Be especially cautious when a review compares a laptop result with a desktop result. Different CPUs and complete systems can influence the outcome, so the entire gap cannot automatically be credited to Thunderbolt or the enclosure.
For instance, TechSpot’s specific OCuLink and Thunderbolt eGPU comparison is evidence about the configurations it tested, not a universal ranking for every laptop, enclosure, or game. Benchmarks depend on hardware, software, drivers, game version, settings, and test method.

What to check before buying an eGPU
An enclosure and a desktop graphics card are only useful if they work with your particular laptop and fit your needs. Before buying, verify:
- Host support: the laptop has a compatible eGPU connection; do not assume that a connector’s shape alone guarantees support.
- Enclosure compatibility: the manufacturer supports your host connection and intended graphics card.
- Physical fit and power: the card fits the enclosure, and the enclosure can supply the card’s power requirements.
- Features you need: enclosure power delivery and extra ports vary by model.
- Total value: compare the combined enclosure and graphics-card cost, space, and portability with a gaming laptop or desktop.
For example, Sapphire identifies its GearBox 500 as a Thunderbolt 3 eGFX enclosure on its product page. That establishes the product category, not compatibility with every laptop or GPU; check the exact model specifications before purchasing.
When an eGPU is unlikely to triple FPS
Expect a smaller or less predictable uplift when the laptop’s CPU is already limiting the game, its built-in discrete GPU is reasonably capable, or the eGPU connection and display path constrain the workload. A result from one game at one resolution also does not predict performance in another game, since GPU demand and engine behavior vary.
The practical decision is not whether an eGPU can ever triple frame rates—it can, in a favorable comparison—but whether a specific laptop, enclosure, card, and game combination produces enough improvement to justify its cost and compromises. The reviewed sources do not establish a general eGPU FPS-uplift statistic, so treat any broad multiplier claim skeptically unless it includes the complete test setup.
