It uses the machine’s only reported M.2 slot, moves the boot drive to an external enclosure, and adds external hardware and cabling. Treat the GPU as fixed unless you are comfortable experimenting with a setup that Valve has not documented as supported.
Can you replace the Steam Machine’s internal GPU?
There is no standard internal GPU replacement procedure documented in the available Valve materials or reporting. Valve describes the Steam Machine as a compact SteamOS system with a semi-custom AMD desktop-class CPU and GPU, but its documentation does not explain how to remove or replace the GPU. In a November 2025 report, PC Gamer described the announced system as having replaceable SO-DIMM memory and one NVMe slot supporting 2230 and 2280 drives. Valve engineer Jeff Mucha said: “The core parts that we’re considering to be upgradable would be the M.2 storage as well as the RAM, which is a bit harder.” That points to storage and memory—not the GPU—as the upgrade areas under consideration. These are reported pre-release specifications and comments, not a later service manual or guarantee that every production detail will be identical. PC Gamer’s November 12, 2025 report

One reported modification connects an external graphics card using an OCuLink adapter in the M.2 slot. In the example covered by Tom’s Hardware, the boot drive was moved into a USB-C NVMe enclosure, and the system was left open while a possible case modification was considered. The arrangement is a demonstration, not a Valve installation guide or compatibility guarantee. Tom’s Hardware’s report on the modification
#1 Best Overall
- 【Up Link & Down Link】Up link: Oculink 4i(PCIE4.0x4), Down Link: PCIEx16(PCIE4.0x4). Only Support Oculink.
- 【Power Supply】This DEG1 supports ATX and SFX standard power supplies, which provides flexible power supply solutions for mini chassis.
- 【Oculink Interfaces】Please kindly note the OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the machine needs to be turned off first.
- 【Follow-start Function】The follow-start function is only compatible with MINISFORUM Mini PCs, it requires the use of original wires.
- Note: The GPU is not included.
- Hardware: The reported setup used an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter, an external GPU dock and graphics card, and a USB-C NVMe enclosure for the boot drive.
- Slot trade-off: The M.2 connection occupies the machine’s only NVMe slot, according to the report, so the internal boot drive cannot remain there in this arrangement.
- Physical trade-off: The dock, GPU, enclosure, and cables add bulk and undermine the compact all-in-one setup.
- Installation uncertainty: The report describes cable-routing and case-fit challenges; it does not establish a repeatable procedure for other owners or configurations.
The reported rear USB-C port is USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C at 10 Gbps. The cited modification used OCuLink through the M.2 slot; it does not establish that the built-in USB-C port supports eGPUs. PC Gamer and Tom’s Hardware
Which option makes more sense?
| Decision | Internal GPU replacement | External GPU modification |
|---|---|---|
| Feasibility | No routine replacement path is documented in the cited materials. | One M.2-to-OCuLink modification has been reported; it is not an official support path. |
| What it takes | No user procedure or compatible replacement part is established. | Adapter, external dock and GPU, external boot-drive enclosure, and potentially a case modification. |
| Impact on the system | If left untouched, the machine retains its compact design. | Uses the only reported M.2 slot and adds external hardware, cables, and setup complexity. |
| Support and reliability | Official GPU serviceability is not established. | A one-off enthusiast demonstration is not a Valve support or compatibility guarantee. |
| Performance evidence | Announced specifications are available, but not a controlled comparison against the modification. | Tom’s Hardware relays one user’s result; it is not a controlled benchmark or a promise of performance in other games. |
The comparison reflects the evidence in PC Gamer’s report and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage.

- Advantage of the dock: Our enclosue detachable design on both ends for improved portability and easy storage. PCB board with 10μ gold-plated contacts ensure superior conductivity and reduce oxidation/rust-related resistance that may cause system crashes or BSOD. Multi-status LED indicators provide clear visual feedback for real-time device monitoring. Transfer Speed: PCIe 4.0 x4 (64Gbps )
- SFF-8611 Male to Male Cable: Ultra-thin & flexible design (0.5mm thickness) with premium aesthetics, eliminating port damage risks from rigid traditional OCuLink cables. Flat cable architecture with full-coverage shielding and advanced EMI materials to minimize interference and performance degradation
- Compatible Graphics Cards: Compatible with graphics cards of various sizes like RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX etc., no need to worry about graphics card length restrictions. 🔺Compatible Power Supply: Compatible with standard ATX power supply ONLY, dual screw mounting (top & bottom) for PSU stability
- Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.
What performance should you expect?
The announced Steam Machine GPU specification is semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 with 28 compute units and 8 GB of VRAM, as reported by PC Gamer in November 2025. Valve has also described a target of playing every Steam game at 4K60 with upscaling such as FSR. Engineer Yazan Aldehayyat’s wording was: “Our benchmark has always been that it should have enough performance to play every game on Steam at 4K60 when you do some sort of upscaling like FSR.” This is a stated target, not a measured result or guarantee for every title. PC Gamer, November 12, 2025
Tom’s Hardware reported a modder’s RX 9070 XT setup running Crimson Desert at more than 100 FPS on High, but that is one reported configuration and game result. The cited coverage does not provide a controlled benchmark comparing that external setup with the Steam Machine’s internal GPU. Do not use the single result to predict performance across games or systems. Tom’s Hardware

Who should consider the eGPU route?
An external GPU modification is worth considering only if you specifically want a hardware experiment and accept losing the internal M.2 drive position, relocating the boot drive, managing an external dock and cables, and potentially altering the case. The reported example shows that an eGPU arrangement has been attempted; it does not establish a supported, plug-and-play feature. A SteamOS eGPU feature request opened November 17, 2025 is a user request, not an official Valve support statement.
If your priority is a straightforward upgrade, the available reporting points to storage and RAM as the practical user-upgrade areas, not the graphics processor. For a graphics upgrade, weigh the experimental eGPU route against using a system designed for a replaceable graphics card rather than assuming the Steam Machine has an ordinary internal GPU swap.
