Check the reader model, file extension and book source first. Then use the matching fix: re-download and repair the account for a store book, use the required authorization workflow for a protected library or retailer file, or sideload only a supported, unprotected file.
Start by identifying the reader and file
Find the exact e-reader model and the file extension—the letters after the final period in the filename. Then check the manufacturer’s format list for that model. A format supported by one generation may not work on another.

For example, Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI for its eReaders, but Kobo Original and Kobo Wi Fi do not support EPUB3. Check Kobo’s format list rather than assuming that every EPUB file is compatible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPay particular attention to files ending in .acsm. On Kobo, this is not the finished ebook: it is a license/download file for an Adobe DRM-protected book. Opening it directly on the e-reader will not work; the file must be processed through the authorized Adobe Digital Editions workflow.

Check where the book came from and what protects it
The source determines how a book is delivered and which account or authorization it needs. A title bought from the reader’s built-in store may sync to its library, while a library loan or book bought elsewhere may require a separate transfer. A purchase in one store does not automatically make its protected file usable on another brand’s reader.
Kobo store, library and third-party books
For a Kobo store purchase, first check that the reader is signed into the account that bought the book and that the title appears in the library. Many newer Kobo readers can borrow library books directly, so Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is not required for every Kobo library loan.
For an Adobe DRM book that needs computer transfer, Kobo’s process uses ADE: authorize the computer and the Kobo, use ADE to retrieve the ebook from the .acsm file, then transfer the book to the reader. Kobo’s current instructions say to use a ByteBooks ID, rather than an Adobe ID, when ADE asks for sign-in. Follow Kobo’s ADE instructions for the authorization and transfer steps.
Kindle books
Amazon says Kindle ebooks with DRM are limited to Kindle apps and devices. Open a protected title in the Kindle app or device associated with the purchasing account; converting or copying the file to another reader does not remove that restriction.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.

- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
There is a narrower exception for eligible DRM-free Kindle titles. Effective January 20, 2026, Amazon says verified purchasers can download EPUB or PDF copies of confirmed DRM-free books from Manage Your Content and Devices. Borrowed Kindle Unlimited and other service copies are excluded. After a publisher changes a title’s DRM setting, Amazon says it may take 24–72 hours for the change to take effect. These conditions do not apply to every Kindle book. See Amazon’s DRM guidance.
Try low-risk fixes for a Kobo book that will not open
If the problem is a Kobo store book or a download that has stopped working, Kobo’s troubleshooting sequence starts with the reader’s library and account—not a factory reset.
- Remove the book from the reader, then download it again.
- Repair the reader account using Kobo’s account-repair option.
- Confirm that the reader is signed into the Kobo account that owns the book.
- Sign out of the account on the reader, then sign back in.
For a failed download, check that the Wi-Fi connection is strong, then use Kobo’s account and download troubleshooting guidance: Kobo eBook and audiobook troubleshooting.
Fix a Kobo library loan showing “Content locked”
If a library loan displays “Content locked” or “Oops! This document couldn’t be opened,” OverDrive identifies mismatched authorization between the Kobo and ADE as a cause. Its instructions, last updated June 22, 2026, call for checking the reader’s date and time, resetting authorization on the Kobo and in ADE, authorizing them with the appropriate same account, and then downloading the loan again and transferring it again.

- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.
- Check that the Kobo’s date and time are correct.
- Reset authorization on the Kobo and in ADE, following the device and software instructions.
- Reauthorize both with the same appropriate account. OverDrive says Adobe IDs are no longer supported for ADE reauthorization; use a ByteBooks ID. Using the same email address as the old Adobe ID can help retain access to books already downloaded.
- Download the library loan again and transfer it to the Kobo again.
Use OverDrive’s Kobo Content locked troubleshooting steps for the authorization reset details. Treat a factory reset as a last resort: OverDrive warns that it erases information stored on the reader. Back up content before considering one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when a USB transfer helps—and when it cannot
A computer connection can transfer a supported, non-protected EPUB or PDF to a Kobo, or move an authorized ADE book to it. Kobo’s direct sideload method does not open DRM-protected or third-party files by itself, and a cable cannot make an unsupported format compatible. For sideloading details, see Kobo’s instructions for non-protected PDF and EPUB files.
Use the cable supplied with the reader if available, and connect directly to the computer where possible. Kobo notes that some USB-C hubs may not detect the reader. If the original cable is missing or damaged, check the model’s connector and confirm that the replacement supports data transfer; ports and cable needs vary by reader.
Quick Recap
Match the symptom to the likely fix
| What you see | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The reader rejects the file immediately | Unsupported format or version for that model | Check the model-specific format list; use a supported file supplied in a compatible form. |
The file ends in .acsm |
Adobe DRM license/download file, not the finished ebook | Process it through ADE and authorize the computer and reader. |
| “Content locked” or “Oops! This document couldn’t be opened” on a Kobo library loan | Authorization mismatch between Kobo and ADE | Check date/time, reset and align authorization, then re-download and transfer the loan. |
| A Kobo store book is missing or fails to open | Download or account problem | Remove and download again; repair the account; verify the signed-in account. |
| A Kindle book will not open on another brand’s reader | Kindle DRM may restrict the title to Kindle apps and devices | Use the Kindle ecosystem, or check whether the title is an eligible DRM-free download. |
| A file copied by USB still will not open | It may be protected, unsupported, or incompletely transferred | Confirm both model compatibility and DRM status; USB copying does not bypass either. |
