Start by checking that both AirPods Pro are seated in the case, the case has power, and Bluetooth is on. Then follow the branch for the problem you are seeing: charging, connection, or automatic switching. The right cable and reset steps depend on your AirPods Pro generation and case.
Start with the model, case, and charge
Check which AirPods Pro generation you have and whether the case has a Lightning or USB-C port. Some cases also support wireless charging; support varies by case. These details determine which cable and reset procedure to use.

- Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and connect the case to power with a cable that fits its port.
- Leave the AirPods and case charging for at least 15 minutes before testing again. Check that the cable is firmly connected to the case and adapter, and that the adapter is plugged into a working outlet.
- If you use a Qi-compatible charger with a case that supports wireless charging, place the case on the charger with its status light facing up. Reposition it if the light does not turn on; if charging still does not begin, try a compatible wired connection.
Apple says the case can charge with or without the earbuds inside. A green status light means fully charged; amber means less than one full charge remains. A dark light means you should charge the AirPods before use. Light patterns can vary by model and firmware, so do not use one pattern alone to diagnose a fault. You can also check battery status on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or on the case where supported. See Apple’s AirPods charging guide.

- Open the device’s audio output picker and select AirPods Pro. Start playback and check that the device volume is up.
- If they do not appear or connect, return the AirPods to the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then open it and try pairing again.
For AirPods Pro 1 or 2 with an iPhone or iPad, open the case and hold the setup button on its back until the light flashes white. Hold the open case near the device and follow the on-screen prompt. On a Mac, pair them from Bluetooth settings if they are not listed as an output.
Reset AirPods Pro 1 or 2
Reset only after the connection checks and pairing attempt fail. Apple’s reset steps for AirPods Pro 1 and 2 are:
- Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. If AirPods Pro appear, tap the info button next to them, then tap Forget This Device.
- Open the case lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white.
- Reconnect by holding the open case near your device and following the prompts.
A reset clears custom AirPods settings, so you may need to set those up again. AirPods Pro 3 uses a different front-of-case tap sequence; do not use the Pro 1 or 2 button instructions for that model. Apple’s AirPods reset guide gives the model-specific procedures.

Automatic switching has requirements that are separate from basic Bluetooth pairing. Apple says participating devices need current operating systems, must use the same Apple Account, and must have two-factor authentication enabled. AirPods Pro should be set up with that account. If the requirements are not met, manually choose AirPods Pro as the audio destination.

- Premium Replacement: Compatible with AirPod Pro 1/2 charging case (USB-C) replacement for seamless performance
Choose AirPods Pro manually
- iPhone or iPad: Choose AirPods Pro from Now Playing, the Lock Screen, or Control Center.
- Mac: Choose them as the audio output from Bluetooth in Control Center.
- Apple Watch or Apple TV: Choose the playback destination in the device’s audio controls.
Stop unwanted automatic switching
On the iPhone or iPad where switching is disruptive, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info button next to AirPods Pro, and change Connect to This iPhone or Connect to This iPad to When Last Connected to This [device]. On a Mac, open System Settings > Bluetooth, select AirPods Pro, and set Connect to This Mac to When Last Connected to This Mac. Choose Automatically again if you want automatic switching back.
Apple says sound should not switch automatically during a phone call, FaceTime call, or video conference. If manual selection works but automatic switching does not, check that the devices meet the account and software requirements. Apple’s guide to switching AirPods between devices explains the controls and prerequisites.
