If an Android phone unexpectedly switches off or restarts, first work out which pattern you are seeing: does it stay off, reboot by itself, or loop at the startup screen? Then check updates and storage, test in Safe Mode, and rule out a case or accessory pressing a button. These checks can narrow the cause, but they cannot diagnose a battery or hardware fault. The phrase “without a battery” can also mean a device designed to run without an internal battery; that is a separate, specialized case.
What “without a battery” means
There are two different situations. An ordinary Android phone may shut down even though its battery appears charged, or while it is connected to power. Alternatively, a product may be designed to operate without an internal battery and rely on external power.

For the second case, Android’s platform documentation explains that batteryless devices are treated as externally powered for relevant framework behavior, so they do not shut down because Android reports a low-battery state. Accurate reporting of charger and battery status depends on the device’s power-supply driver or Health HAL. This is engineering guidance for products designed that way—not a guarantee that an ordinary phone can run safely or reliably with its battery removed, or that a standard wall charger will power it. Before changing settings, note what the phone actually does and when it happens. These observations help choose what to check next; they do not prove a particular cause.

- It turns off and stays off: Note whether it happens while charging or unplugged, and whether the phone will turn back on normally.
- It restarts by itself: Record whether this occurs while idle, in a pocket, after an update, or during a particular app or task.
- It loops at startup: Note whether it reaches the home screen or keeps returning to the startup screen.
- It happens when hot or charging: Pay attention to unusual heat. Xiaomi advises stopping charging and seeking service if a device heats abnormally while charging. Xiaomi Support: The Xiaomi smartphone and Xiaomi Pad crash, freeze and restart repeatedly.
Try reversible software checks first
Install available system and app updates
Check for an Android system update and update apps through Google Play. Settings names and paths vary by manufacturer and model, so use the phone maker’s instructions if you cannot find the update controls. An update may be relevant if the issue began afterward, but timing alone does not establish the cause. Google Android Help: Fix an Android device that’s restarting or crashing.
Check free storage
Google says an Android phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. This is guidance about available storage—not a battery-charge threshold or proof that low storage caused a particular shutdown. Check storage in Settings; if space is low, remove files or apps you no longer need, then observe whether the symptom changes. Google Android Help.

Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. The entry method differs by phone, so follow the manufacturer’s directions for your model. Use the result as a diagnostic clue:
- The problem stops in Safe Mode: A downloaded app may be involved. Restart normally, remove recently installed apps one at a time, and test after each removal.
- The problem continues in Safe Mode: Downloaded apps may not be the cause. Continue with accessory checks and the phone maker’s troubleshooting guidance.
Safe Mode does not identify a faulty component by itself. Google, Samsung, and Xiaomi describe it as a way to check whether downloaded apps or software may be involved. Google Android Help; Samsung Support: Samsung phone or tablet unexpectedly powers off; Xiaomi Support.

Rule out a case, accessory, or scheduled restart
Temporarily remove the case, external battery pack, and other attached accessories. Make sure nothing is covering sensors or pressing buttons. A case or placement that presses the power button may explain a restart, particularly if it happens while the phone is in a pocket.
If the phone is a Samsung device, check whether Auto restart is enabled; the setting and its availability can vary by model. Xiaomi also notes that an automatic software update may account for a restart while the phone is idle. These are manufacturer-specific checks, not universal Android settings. Check external power only when it fits the symptom
If the problem occurs while charging, the cable, charger, or external power path may be worth checking. Samsung recommends charging an unexpectedly powering-off Samsung phone with a genuine Samsung charger and USB cable. Follow your own phone maker’s compatibility guidance; this is a brand-specific recommendation, and changing charging equipment will not resolve an internal fault. Samsung Support.

Back up before a factory reset
A factory reset erases saved data and installed apps. Treat it as an advanced troubleshooting step, not the first fix. Back up important data and make sure you know the account credentials needed to set up the phone again. Reset steps differ by device, and Android says the process can take up to one hour. Samsung recommends checking whether the problem remains before reinstalling apps; if it does, seek service. Reset menus and exact instructions vary, so use the guidance for your model rather than a generic button combination. Google Android Help; Samsung Support.
When to get the phone inspected
Contact the phone maker or a qualified repair provider if shutdowns persist after software and accessory checks, the phone repeatedly reboots, or you suspect a battery, power-button, or internal-component fault. Xiaomi lists battery aging, button problems, and internal components among possible causes; Samsung also advises service when troubleshooting does not resolve unexpected shutdowns. Those possibilities are not a diagnosis of your phone. Do not open a sealed device or fit a generic replacement battery based on symptoms alone. Xiaomi Support; Samsung Support.
