The main problem with Amazon’s October Prime sale may be its name, not its deals. In a 6 October 2026 commentary, What Hi-Fi? writer Joe Svetlik argues that “Prime Big Deal Days” is less clear and natural than “Prime Day” or “October Prime Day.” That is an editorial opinion, not the result of a consumer survey.
Why “Prime Big Deal Days” is hard to follow
Amazon’s autumn event is called Prime Big Deal Days, while the better-known summer event is commonly referred to as Prime Day. Svetlik’s point is that adding “Big Deal Days” makes the autumn event feel like a separate kind of promotion rather than the seasonal version of a familiar sale. He argues that shoppers should not have to be corrected for using the simpler name.

As he puts it: “Because if you have to ask people to use the correct name, maybe it’s not them, but the name itself that’s the problem.”

Svetlik describes four major Amazon sales across the year and says two are for Prime members while two are open to everyone. The schedule and eligibility split below reflect his account; they are not independently confirmed as an official Amazon calendar here.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
| Event in the article | Season or timing | Access described by What Hi-Fi? | Additional context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring Deal Days | Spring | Open to everyone | The article says the spring event is called Amazon Spring Deal Days in the UK and Amazon Big Spring Sale in the US. |
| Prime Day | Summer | Prime members | The familiar summer event name used in the article. |
| Prime Big Deal Days | Autumn | Prime members | The article says it was formerly called the Prime Early Access Sale. |
| Black Friday | Late autumn | Open to everyone | Listed as the fourth major annual sale in the article. |
The names are not consistent across seasons or, in spring, across the UK and US. The autumn event’s earlier name adds another layer: a shopper familiar with Prime Early Access Sale may not immediately recognize Prime Big Deal Days as the same seasonal promotion.
What would make the calendar clearer?
Svetlik proposes matching the sale name to its season: “Spring Prime Day,” “Summer Prime Day” and “Autumn Prime Day.” The idea is not that every event must be identical, but that a shared naming pattern would signal that these are seasonal counterparts.

He also asks Amazon to choose a consistent approach to eligibility: make the sales Prime-member events or make them open to everyone. In his account, the calendar currently mixes both models, so the name alone does not tell shoppers whether membership is required.

What shoppers should take from the criticism
This is a case for clearer branding, not a claim that the discounts are poor. The commentary does not compare prices or product deals, and it offers no survey evidence that shoppers prefer one label. Its narrower point is that a sale name should make the event and its place in the calendar easy to understand—and that a consistent label and access policy could do that better.
