Greek police say 17 people were arrested in an investigation into an alleged cryptocurrency investment pyramid scheme that promised to double investors’ money in 50 days. Police estimated that more than 10,000 people were recruited and over $8 million flowed through the platform. Separate reporting said two Greek servicemen were among suspects accused of leadership roles. These are allegations, not findings of guilt.

What Greek police allege

In an announcement dated 2 October 2026, the Hellenic Police said its Katerini Crime Prosecution and Investigation Sub-Directorate had spent months investigating activity dating back at least to 2025. Police alleged that the group operated an online investment platform through apparently legitimate corporate entities, promised that investors’ initial capital would double within 50 days, and used a pyramid structure to recruit more participants. Police also said the operation lacked authorization from the competent authority; the announcement does not cite a separate regulator’s finding.

The claims describe the alleged pitch and operation, not verified investment returns. The allegations have not been tested in court, according to Decrypt.

What the reported figures mean

The numbers in the police announcement refer to different measures, not one confirmed count of victims or losses.

Figure What it describes
More than 10,000 people Police estimate of people recruited.
More than $8 million Police estimate of money that flowed into the platform; it is not an established net loss.
18 people; €55,970 Victims identified by police during the investigation and the amount those 18 were reported to have invested. This is not a final total for everyone affected.
17 arrests People police said were arrested in the investigation.
€295,090 Cash police said was seized, not a confirmed amount returned to investors.

The announcement also said police identified two alleged leadership members and formed a case file for nine additional members. It listed searches of five offices, nine residences and other premises, with seizures including phones, computers, storage devices, bank and SIM cards, and surveillance equipment. The reported seizure does not establish how much money can ultimately be traced or recovered.

What reporting says about the servicemen and AI association

A 5 October 2026 Decrypt report, citing To Vima and other reporting, said two servicemen were among nine suspects accused of leadership roles. It described them as coming from Pieria and Larissa and reported that investigators believed one had learned of the method from an overseas contact. The police announcement does not identify the servicemen or confirm those details in the text available.

Decrypt also described an association for artificial-intelligence enthusiasts in Katerini as an alleged recruiting vehicle, and reported that its 44-year-old leader was remanded in custody after questioning. Those details are secondary reporting, not statements confirmed in the police announcement. Decrypt said six of the first seven suspects were released under restrictive conditions, with bail set between €15,000 and €20,000.

Why the suspect counts should not be merged

The police announcement’s categories—17 arrests, two alleged leadership members and a file for nine additional members—are not the same wording as Decrypt’s report of two servicemen among nine suspects accused of leadership roles. The sources do not establish that the two groups of nine are identical. In particular, the reporting does not mean that nine soldiers were arrested.

The recruitment estimate, the 18 victims identified, their reported €55,970 investment and the estimated $8 million entering the platform also measure different things. The available sources do not explain the gap between them or establish a final number of affected people and total losses.

Reported entry amounts and local estimate

Decrypt reported an €800 entry amount and a €5,000 VIP amount, with investors in both tiers allegedly promised a doubling of their money. It also relayed an estimate of 1,842 members and about €2 million in Katerini alone. These are reported case details, not the police announcement’s figures or a complete accounting of the platform.

What is still unresolved

The available reporting does not establish the full list of suspects, the platform’s complete transaction history, the amount that can be traced or recovered, the final number of affected people, or a court ruling. Arrests and referral to an investigating judge are procedural steps, not proof of guilt. The case should therefore be described as an investigation into alleged fraud unless later court findings establish otherwise.
