The problem can come from either side of the connection, a saved pairing, or nearby wireless interference. Work through these seven fixes in order, starting with the reversible checks.
1. Check for Echo software updates
Amazon says Echo software updates automatically. You can ask the device, “Check for software updates.” The available menus and update details vary by Echo model, so avoid relying on instructions for a different model.

2. Confirm the Bluetooth profiles are compatible
Having Bluetooth does not guarantee that two devices support the same connection features. Amazon lists Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP SNK) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) as supported for Echo Bluetooth connections. 3. Move devices away from possible interference
Temporarily move the Echo and Bluetooth peripheral away from microwaves, baby monitors, and other wireless devices. Amazon identifies these as possible sources of interference. 4. Charge the peripheral and bring it close
Make sure the Bluetooth device has sufficient charge, then keep it near the Echo while pairing and checking the connection. For Alexa-compatible smart-home Bluetooth devices specifically, Amazon recommends placement within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo. That recommendation is not a guaranteed range for every Bluetooth speaker, phone, or other audio device. 5. Forget the pairing and pair again
- Open the Alexa app and tap Devices.
- Select the Echo that drops the connection.
- Open its settings, then Bluetooth Devices.
- Select the peripheral and choose Forget Device.
- Put the peripheral into pairing mode, then pair it with the Echo again using the Alexa app.

6. Check the peripheral’s firmware and pairing instructions
If the peripheral is an Alexa-compatible smart-home Bluetooth device, check the manufacturer’s website or companion app for a firmware update. Confirm that the device is compatible with Alexa and follow its model-specific instructions for entering pairing mode. 7. Restart the devices; reset only as a last resort
Unplug the Echo and the smart-home device, if applicable, then reconnect them and test the Bluetooth connection. If the problem continues after the earlier checks, Amazon’s Bluetooth guidance advises resetting the device. A reset can require setup again, so follow the instructions for your Echo model and treat this as a later step—not a guaranteed fix. If it still disconnects
To narrow down which side is responsible, try the same peripheral with another Bluetooth source, or try a different compatible peripheral with the Echo. Change one condition at a time—such as distance or nearby wireless devices—so you can tell what affects the connection. If one device repeatedly drops while another works under the same conditions, that is useful evidence for troubleshooting, but it does not by itself prove a hardware defect.
These steps address Bluetooth pairing and drops, not Echo Wi-Fi outages or smart-home skill problems. Amazon Help describes the issue as “Your Echo device can’t pair to Bluetooth or your Bluetooth connection drops.” It does not provide a failure rate or guarantee that a particular fix will stop every disconnection.
