A Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond account reports that loading loose cargo cost $5.83 per ton in 1956, compared with 15.8 cents per ton for loading the Ideal X. That is a calculated reduction of about 97.3% in loading cost—not a 97.3% reduction in the entire cost of shipping goods from origin to destination.
How did a metal box cut loading costs?
With loose cargo, dockworkers had to handle individual goods repeatedly as they moved between ship and shore. Containerization changed the unit of work: freight was packed into a large box that could be handled as one load, then moved onward by truck. Fewer separate handling operations meant less dockside labor and less time spent loading and unloading.

The World Customs Organization describes the Ideal X’s boxes as 33-foot aluminum containers designed by engineer Keith Tantlinger. The box mattered, but the operating system mattered too. As the WCO puts it, “He understood that reducing the cost of shipping goods required not just a metal box but an entire new way of handling freight.”

What happened on the Ideal X’s 1956 voyage?
Malcom McLean’s operation loaded the converted tanker at Newark, New Jersey, for a voyage to Houston. The World Customs Organization says it carried 58 containers and that loading took less than eight hours. The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond dates the departure to April 26, 1956, and reports that the ship arrived in Houston five days later.

The experiment grew out of an effort to move freight in truck trailer bodies. The International Institute of Container Lessors’ history describes the shift toward handling the box without its wheels—a step toward treating the container itself as the transferable freight unit rather than moving a complete trailer onto the ship.
What does the more-than-90% figure measure?

The denominator is the cost of loading per ton. The comparison does not establish that the entire freight bill—including transport, terminals, or infrastructure—fell by the same percentage. The historical account also points to broader benefits such as reduced labor, faster loading and unloading, and less pilferage, but the two figures do not quantify those costs across the whole journey.

Why the first voyage was not the whole container revolution
The Ideal X demonstrated the commercial promise of moving freight in large units, but an early converted-tanker operation was not identical to the later standardized intermodal system. The initial achievement was to make a container part of a coordinated process: load freight into a box, move the box between ship and shore, and continue its journey by road. Standardization and the wider infrastructure of container shipping developed beyond this first voyage.
