The change affects Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo (3rd Gen), Echo Studio (1st Gen) and Echo (4th Gen), according to the report. It concerns voice control; it does not establish that the physical line-in port stopped working. If your Echo supports audio input, check for an AUX Audio or Line In control in the Alexa app. If that setting is unavailable, Bluetooth is a practical alternative.
What changed—and which Echo models are affected?
Amazon told customers that requests such as “Alexa, play from line in” and “Alexa, set aux input” would no longer work. Ars Technica reported the notice on October 6, 2026, and said an Amazon spokesperson confirmed the change. The report names these models:

The change is specifically about using a voice command to select AUX. It does not show that wired input has been removed from every listed speaker, nor that every Echo model once supported the command. The report says Amazon characterized AUX voice-command use as uncommon but gives no usage figure.
First check whether your Echo has an audio input
“Echo AUX” is not a reliable description of what a 3.5 mm jack does. Depending on the model, a jack may be an output, an input, or a port with model-specific input/output options. Check the exact model and generation using Amazon’s Echo identification guide, then consult the documentation for that model before connecting a source or buying a cable.

One documented example is the Echo Studio (2019 release): Amazon’s safety and compliance information lists a 3.5 mm AUX/mini-optical line-in. That specification is for the 2019 release; do not assume another Studio generation has the same port. Amazon forum staff have also described AUX Audio input/output settings on certain other full-size Echo models, but that guidance is model- and software-specific. A jack’s shape alone does not confirm line-in.
How to try wired playback without a voice command
- Identify the Echo model and generation. Use the model-identification guide and check the model’s specifications.
- Verify that the jack accepts audio input. Do not connect an audio source on the assumption that every 3.5 mm Echo jack is line-in.
- Inspect that device’s settings in the Alexa app. On supported models, Amazon forum staff have described an AUX Audio > Line In control. Look for the equivalent setting for your device; the available controls and labels can vary by model and software version.
- Select Line In if the control is present. Connect the source only after confirming the port’s input function, then use the app setting rather than the discontinued voice command.
If the app has no AUX Audio or Line In control, the available evidence does not establish a universal app route for that Echo. A routine or a different spoken command should not be treated as a replacement for the removed voice control.

Use Bluetooth when the app does not offer Line In
If your phone or other audio source supports Bluetooth, pair it with the Echo using Amazon’s Bluetooth pairing instructions. Once paired, you can reconnect through the device’s Bluetooth controls or say “Pair Bluetooth.” Amazon notes that some devices reconnect automatically when they are in range. This sends audio wirelessly to the Echo; it does not make an output-only jack into an input.
When Echo Input or Home Theater makes sense
Echo Input: add Alexa to another speaker
Echo Input is a separate product path for using Alexa with an external speaker, not a way to restore AUX switching on an existing Echo. Amazon’s Echo Input setup instructions describe connecting it to a speaker’s AUX input or pairing it with a Bluetooth speaker. Consider this only if your goal is to hear Alexa through that separate speaker.

Alexa Home Theater: for compatible Fire TV setups
Amazon’s Alexa Home Theater instructions cover specified Fire TV and Echo combinations, including HDMI-ARC arrangements that can route audio from other HDMI sources through compatible Echo speakers. This is not a general-purpose way to connect an analog source such as a turntable to an Echo AUX input.

Will a cable fix it?
Only if your specific Echo has a line-in port and you need a wired connection. A standard 3.5 mm cable cannot turn an output-only jack into an input, and it cannot restore Alexa’s removed voice command. Confirm the model and port function before buying or connecting anything.
