If your AirPods work with your iPhone but a feature is missing on your Mac, that does not necessarily mean anything is broken. Pairing and basic audio connection are separate from feature compatibility: the AirPods model, the device playing the audio, its operating system, settings, firmware, app or content, and sometimes language and region all affect what is available.
Why AirPods can connect but still lack a feature
Apple says supported AirPods set up with one Apple device can connect automatically to other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That convenience does not make every AirPods function available on every connected device. Apple publishes feature-specific requirements, so successful pairing is not proof that a particular feature is supported.

Compatibility has several layers:
- AirPods model and variant: Eligibility differs by feature, and some lists distinguish variants such as AirPods 4 (ANC).
- Host device and software: A feature may require a particular iPhone or Mac model and a minimum operating-system version.
- Firmware, settings, and services: Some features require current AirPods firmware, an installed app, or an enabled control.
- Playback and availability: Spatial Audio depends on supported apps and content; Live Translation availability can vary by language and region.
These requirements are independent enough that one feature may work on a device while another does not.

How connection and automatic switching work
After initial setup, AirPods can connect to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, on supported models. Setup steps can differ by device and AirPods model; Apple provides separate instructions for iPhone and iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Vision Pro.

Automatic switching is a separate behavior: audio may move to the Apple device you are using. If sound goes to the wrong device, choose the AirPods manually from that device’s audio controls. Apple also documents a When Last Connected option on iPhone, iPad, and Mac to change automatic connection behavior. Switching audio between devices does not make an unsupported feature compatible with the receiving device. Apple’s guide to switching AirPods between devices explains the controls.
Requirements vary by feature

What to check when an AirPods feature is missing
- Identify the exact AirPods model and variant. Confirm the generation and, where relevant, whether it is the ANC version.
- Check Apple’s compatibility list for that feature. Do not infer support from the fact that Bluetooth audio or pairing works.
- Check the host device and operating system. Compare the device model and OS version with the feature’s requirements.
- Confirm prerequisites. Where specified, update AirPods firmware, install the required app, and enable the required service or setting.
- Look for the control on the device handling audio. Some settings are surfaced on iPhone, iPad, or Mac and may carry over when AirPods switch devices.
- Check playback-specific conditions. For Spatial Audio, confirm the app and particular content support it. For Live Translation, check language and regional availability.
- For routing problems, check switching separately. Confirm the devices use the same Apple Account, try manually selecting AirPods, and adjust When Last Connected if automatic switching is disruptive.
This checklist reflects Apple’s published requirements; it is not a diagnosis of any individual AirPods or device.

Why the distinction matters
There is no single “Apple-compatible” setting that guarantees the same AirPods experience everywhere. For example, a feature may be supported by the earbuds but require a newer iPhone than the Mac you are using, or Spatial Audio may be available on a platform but not for the app or item currently playing. Check the requirements for the specific feature and device combination rather than treating connection as an all-features guarantee.
