What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single best Kodi preset: the right choices depend on your display, device, audio connection, and whether you use Kodi’s network features. Start by checking what is happening during playback, then change only the setting that addresses the problem. The settings below use Kodi v21 documentation labels; names and availability may differ by version and platform.
Check playback before changing settings
When a video stutters, looks uneven, or has no sound, first inspect Kodi’s Player Process Info while the problem is occurring. It can show the video’s resolution and frame rate, whether decoding is hardware or software, cache status, system CPU use, and audio codec, channels, and sample rate. The information varies with the media and active settings. See Kodi’s Player Process Info documentation.

- Play the file that exhibits the problem.
- Open Player Process Info using the control available in your Kodi skin or playback controls.
- Note the displayed video, decoding, cache, CPU, and audio details.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Record its original value so you can restore it if playback gets worse.
This check helps distinguish a decoding or processing load from a display-timing or audio-connection issue. A setting is not a fix just because it sounds relevant; verify whether the playback information or the symptom changes.
Match the display refresh rate to the video
In Settings → Player → Videos, Adjust display refresh rate lets Kodi switch a compatible TV or monitor to a rate that better matches the video. Kodi offers Off, Always, On start/stop, and On start behavior. For a first test, On start/stop is a practical choice if you want Kodi to switch for playback and restore the display state afterward; the result depends on the display and connected hardware.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K Ultra HD Resolution: Enjoy your TV in stunning resolution Ultra HD ers four times the resolution of Full HD for greater clarity and detail
- Android TV: With the Android TV operating system you will have access to the best content, download the infinity of applications available through the Google Play Store!

- Chromecast Built-in: Easily cast movies, shows, and photos from your Android or iOS device to your Android TV
- Easy Setup: Access your Google account and configure the device, language and Wi-Fi network
The display may go blank for several seconds while changing refresh rates. If the option is unavailable or no suitable rate is offered, the device, display, connection, or video mode may not support the requested switch. Kodi describes this setting in its Player: Videos settings guide.
Use “Sync playback to display” only when its trade-off fits
Sync playback to display adjusts playback speed to synchronize video with the display refresh rate. Kodi’s documentation illustrates the behavior with a 23.967 fps source on a 50 Hz display, where the player changes speed to simulate 25 fps playback. That is an explanatory example, not a target or a promise of smoother playback on every setup.

The important limitation: this option disables audio passthrough because Kodi may need to adjust audio timing. If your receiver needs to decode an encoded audio stream directly, do not combine this setting with passthrough. Consult Kodi’s video settings and audio settings documentation before changing either option.
Choose hardware decoding and video processing for your device
Hardware decoding
Hardware decoder options are platform-specific. Kodi’s documentation gives Windows DXVA2, Linux VAAPI and VDPAU, and macOS VideoToolbox as examples; a control shown for one operating system or device may be absent on another. Hardware decoding can reduce CPU reliance on a lower-powered system, but support depends on the platform, decoder, and file’s codec. Do not enable every codec toggle indiscriminately, especially where Kodi lists device-specific cautions.
Rank #3
After a change, check Player Process Info to see whether the file is being decoded in hardware or software and whether CPU use or the original symptom changes. Kodi’s video settings guide describes platform-dependent options.
HDR, scaling, and optional enhancements
HDR mode controls require a supported platform and HDR-capable screen. Kodi can switch the display’s HDR mode to suit media or retain the current display mode and tone-map as needed. High-quality scaling and optional video super-resolution features also depend on hardware and can increase GPU, memory, or power demands. Treat these as optional, device-specific choices rather than baseline settings everyone should enable; check Kodi’s video settings documentation for availability.
Rank #4
Configure audio for the connection you actually use
In Settings → System → Audio, Number of channels describes the output connection or speaker layout; it does not set the number of channels sent by passthrough. Kodi’s output configuration includes Fixed, Best Match, and Optimised modes. Fixed mode disables passthrough.
Recommended Free Tools
Passthrough sends supported encoded formats to compatible connected equipment, such as an AV receiver, for decoding. Enable only formats that the receiver supports. If Kodi connects directly to a TV, check the TV’s supported formats rather than assuming it can decode every surround codec. Kodi warns that unsupported passthrough choices can cause very poor playback or no audio. Its audio settings guide explains the options.

Turn off local-network services you do not use
UPnP/DLNA sharing and discovery
Kodi’s UPnP/DLNA controls support library sharing, discovery of remote servers, and control of remote players. They are useful when you intentionally use network playback in your home. If you do not use those features, leave the related controls disabled in Kodi’s UPnP settings. This is separate from the UPnP setting on a router: changing Kodi’s local sharing controls does not change the router’s configuration. Kodi notes security risks inherent in UPnP and explains the feature in its UPnP/DLNA settings guide.
Web server and application remote control
Under Settings → Services → Control, Kodi provides a built-in web server and application-control interfaces. Leave them off unless you have a specific need to control Kodi over the network. Kodi says, “Never expose these interfaces to the internet.” Do not forward them through your router or otherwise make them reachable from the public Internet.
If you use the web server, keep Require authentication enabled; Kodi recommends leaving that setting on. The application-control option is separate and allows network programs to control Kodi without authentication, so enable it only when needed and on a network you trust. A web-server password does not protect every control interface. See Kodi’s Services: Control documentation.
Apply changes as targeted tests
- Uneven motion: check the source frame rate and display capability, then test refresh-rate adjustment.
- Stutter or high CPU use: inspect decoding mode and CPU use before changing platform-specific decoding or processing options.
- No audio or unexpected surround output: verify the connection path, channel layout, and receiver or TV codec support; review passthrough selections.
- Unneeded network visibility or control: disable Kodi sharing, discovery, or remote interfaces you do not use, rather than changing unrelated playback settings.
Kodi’s official settings documentation identifies many options as updated for Kodi v21; your version, operating system, and connected hardware may expose different controls. No documented setting guarantees a particular performance improvement across systems.
