Airline staff turned to handwritten records and other manual procedures during the July 19, 2024 CrowdStrike-related Windows outage because systems used for check-in, baggage handling, booking and crew scheduling were disrupted. The available sources establish those workarounds, but do not verify a particular airport scene of staff writing flight times on whiteboards. The outage was widespread, not a failure of every computer worldwide.
What caused the airline disruption?
CrowdStrike said a defective Falcon content configuration update for Windows sensors caused the outage. In a July 19, 2024 message, CEO George Kurtz said: “The outage was caused by a defect found in a Falcon content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This was not a cyberattack.” That is CrowdStrike’s characterization of the incident, not evidence that every Windows computer or airline system was affected. CrowdStrike’s root-cause analysis describes the faulty content update; its July 19 customer statement is available here.

The triggering update and the operational failure are related but distinct: the update affected Windows hosts, and the resulting outage disrupted airline and airport IT workflows that depended on those systems. A technology provider’s software failure can therefore reach travelers through supporting services even when it does not affect an aircraft’s onboard systems.

Why did staff resort to handwritten processes?
Airline operations rely on connected systems for tasks such as booking, passenger check-in, baggage processing and crew scheduling. When those supporting tools were unavailable or impaired, some staff used paper records and other manual procedures to keep parts of the operation moving. A U.S. Senate hearing record describes handwritten boarding passes and baggage tags, along with manual bag sorting at affected airports. These were fallbacks, not a sign that normal service continued.

The phrase “scribbling flight times on whiteboards” should not be treated as a verified description of a specific airport or airline based on the cited material. The hearing record and IATA commentary document manual workarounds more broadly, but do not identify a particular whiteboard scene. Without a source tied to the location and image, the whiteboard detail is best understood as illustrative rather than independently confirmed.
Were aircraft or air traffic control affected?
IATA Director General Willie Walsh said on July 30, 2024: “Safety was never compromised. Aircraft systems and air traffic control were unaffected.” That statement distinguishes those systems from the airline and airport business systems disrupted by the outage; it does not mean every airline function remained available. IATA’s commentary also argued that the event underscored the need for stronger expectations around technology-provider resilience and transparency.

How large was the disruption?
Published figures describe different measures and time windows, so they should not be added together or read as directly comparable totals.

|---|---|
| 8.5 million computers | IATA’s Willie Walsh cited this as the global computer impact in his July 30, 2024 commentary. |
| Nearly 36,000 delayed flights | IATA’s figure as of Friday mid-afternoon CET during the July 2024 incident, reported in Walsh’s July 30 commentary. |
| Around 10,000 cancelled flights | Walsh’s IATA estimate for cancellations worldwide by the end of that weekend; it is an end-of-weekend estimate, not a current flight statistic. |
| ~99% of Windows sensors online | CrowdStrike said this was the share online as of July 29, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. EDT, compared with its pre-update sensor level. The company said normal week-over-week variance is about 1%. |
| Estimated 1.4 million passengers affected; 5,200 flights cancelled on the first day | Figures cited by a 2025 U.S. Senate hearing record to underlying sources; these are estimates presented in the hearing record, not independently established totals here. |
| 7,000 Delta flights cancelled over five days | A 2025 U.S. Senate hearing record cites a 2024 New York Times report for this figure. It is not a comparable global total. |
The sources do not support a comprehensive airline-by-airline ranking of the disruption or recovery. Delta’s August 2024 SEC filing describes its operational disruption and identifies reliance on technology and third-party service providers in its risk disclosures, but does not by itself explain why Delta’s recovery took longer than that of other carriers. Delta’s Form 8-K provides that company-specific context.

What did CrowdStrike say it changed?
In its August 6, 2024 root-cause announcement, CrowdStrike said it had published its analysis and mitigations. The company also said the particular Channel File 291 scenario was incapable of recurring and that further process improvements were being deployed. Those are CrowdStrike’s statements about its response; they are not independent confirmation of the long-term effectiveness of its remediation.
IATA’s broader lesson was that technology providers should be held to stronger expectations for reliability, resilience and transparency. For airlines, the incident showed how dependence on third-party technology can disrupt customer-facing and ground operations even when the affected software is not part of an aircraft system. Manual procedures can provide a fallback, but they do not reproduce the capacity or speed of normal automated workflows.
