Yes: it is reasonable to rewrite an AI-generated social post if it sounds too robotic. The key is to treat AI output as a draft, not a finished caption. Research suggests people can find machine-generated dialogue uncanny while still struggling to tell whether a post was written by a person or a bot. That means “this sounds off” and “I know this was written by AI” are not the same judgment.
Why an AI post can feel robotic even when you cannot identify it as AI
A 2024 study of social-media discussion threads offers evidence for that distinction. Kristina Radivojevic, Matthew Chou, Karla Badillo-Urquiola, and Paul Brenner recruited 1,095 participants. The authors report that participants identified whether posts were human- or bot-generated with 42% accuracy in the study context, and they observed an “uncanny valley” effect in text dialogue. The result does not establish a universal detection rate, nor does it mean every AI-written post sounds robotic. It does support the idea that wording can feel strange without readers correctly identifying its source. Read the study.

The study examined perception and identification, not ways to edit posts. It does not validate a magic prompt or prove that any particular “humanizer” checklist works. Use the workflow below as practical editorial judgment, not as a scientifically tested formula.

How to make an AI-written post sound more like you
- Keep the idea, rewrite the opening. Start with the point you would actually make in conversation, rather than a generic lead-in. If the draft begins with a broad announcement or throat-clearing, get to the specific observation or message.
- Add context only you can supply. Include a real example, customer question, point of view, or detail about the situation. Generic prompts often produce generic copy; a detail grounded in your experience gives the post a reason to sound distinct.
- Cut claims that could belong to any account. Replace abstract promotional language with concrete nouns, verbs, and examples. Remove unsupported claims and phrases that say little about this particular post, audience, or brand.
- Read it aloud. Change sentences you would not say and adjust rhythm if every line has the same polished, even cadence. The aim is your ordinary voice, not deliberate awkwardness.
- Verify the substance and the fit. Check each factual claim, name, link, and call to action. Then consider whether the tone suits the audience and the platform before scheduling or sharing it.
- Make a person accountable for the final version. OpenAI’s sharing policy tells people posting their own prompts or completions involving its products to “Manually review each generation before sharing or while streaming.” It also says not to represent API-generated content as wholly human-written or wholly AI-written, and places responsibility for published content on a human. This is OpenAI policy for its products, not a universal legal rule. Read OpenAI’s sharing and publication policy.
When should a social post disclose AI involvement?
There is no single disclosure rule in the cited guidance that applies to every caption everywhere. Requirements depend on jurisdiction, content, and the publisher’s role. In the EU, Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. The European Commission’s guidance describes disclosure requirements for AI-generated or manipulated text publications informing the public on matters of public interest, with an exception where the publication has undergone human review and is subject to editorial responsibility. That is a defined scope—not a blanket requirement to label every routine social caption. Publishers should check the applicable final guidance and whether their content and role fall within it. See the Commission’s Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-generated Content and its guidance announcement.

For consumer-facing advertising and marketing, the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s AI Transparency & Disclosure Framework V2, dated 18 August 2026, takes a risk-based, materiality-driven approach and covers AI-generated and AI-assisted text as well as other formats. It is industry guidance, not a substitute for applicable law. Read the IAB framework.
