1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no dependable single winner among Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Akamai Cloud (formerly Linode) and OVHcloud without matching the plans to your workload and location. The clearest published price examples here are Akamai’s Nanode at US$5 per month and an OVHcloud VPS-1 listing at $4.54 per month, but they are not equivalent configurations: OVHcloud lists more memory, storage and vCores. Hetzner and DigitalOcean prices are not established in the available plan details, so check their current configuration totals before choosing.
What counts as a cheap VPS for self-hosting?
A VPS is hosted virtual-server capacity you administer to run software. It can host a website or application; Hetzner advertises one-click deployments for Docker, WordPress, Nextcloud and GitLab. The lowest monthly price is only useful if the plan has enough memory, storage, network allowance and CPU capacity for the service you intend to run.

Compare the same workload rather than the cheapest label on each provider’s plan page. Record vCPU count and type where available, RAM, disk capacity and type, expected CPU duty cycle, monthly outbound transfer, region, and any storage or backup add-ons. Core count alone does not make two plans equivalent.
How do the four providers compare on published plan details?
The figures below are provider-page details available in 2026, not results from a controlled four-provider test. Prices are in the currencies shown, and the OVHcloud page labels its offer range “2027”; treat it as an as-displayed listing rather than a guaranteed checkout price.
#1 Best Overall
| Provider | Example configuration and price | Transfer and backup details | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | Current price and a comparable configuration: not stated (Hetzner official page). | Not stated for a specific plan. | Check the current configuration in its calculator or console, including region and any add-ons. Its official page lists cloud servers in Germany, Finland, Singapore and the USA. |
| DigitalOcean | Comparable plan price and configuration: not stated (DigitalOcean billing documentation). | Inbound transfer is free; extra outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB, and usage is pooled across a team. Bundled-plan Droplets continue billing while powered off. Newer resource-priced v5 configurations list public IPv4 as a separate line item. | Confirm whether the selected Droplet is a bundled or v5 resource-priced configuration, the team’s pooled allowance, any outbound overage, and IPv4 charges. |
| Akamai Cloud (formerly Linode) | Nanode example: US$5/month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage and 1 TB transfer (Akamai pricing page, accessed 2026). | Block storage, object storage, backups, NodeBalancers and egress overage are separately identified pricing areas. | Confirm the Nanode is available in your chosen region and price backup, storage and expected egress needs. |
| OVHcloud | VPS-1 listing: $4.54/month for 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB NVMe (OVHcloud worldwide VPS page, accessed 2026; page labels the range “2027”). | The listing includes daily backup, unlimited traffic and 500 Mbps public bandwidth. A premium rolling seven-day backup is an optional paid service. | Confirm region availability, currency, tax and final checkout price. “Unlimited traffic” does not mean unlimited bandwidth speed; the listing specifies 500 Mbps public bandwidth. |
These entries are not a price-per-performance ranking. The Akamai example has 1 GB of RAM and 25 GB of storage; the OVHcloud listing has 4 GB and 40 GB, along with a different stated core count. The listed price difference cannot establish which is cheaper for a particular application.
Which provider should you choose?
Choose by location first
Pick a region near your users, then compare plans available there. Distance affects latency, and transfer terms or plan availability can vary by region. A low price in a faraway data center may be a poor fit for an interactive service. Compare network performance only from equivalent testing locations and under comparable conditions.

Choose by resource fit and total cost
- For a small, low-traffic service, check whether the lowest plan has sufficient RAM and disk for the operating system, application, database and expected growth.
- For multiple self-hosted services, account for concurrent memory use, disk growth and CPU demand rather than adding up advertised vCores alone.
- For transfer-heavy workloads, calculate expected outbound usage and its overage cost. For DigitalOcean, the documented additional outbound rate is $0.01/GiB, with usage pooled across a team.
- For data that must survive accidental deletion or a provider-side incident, price a recovery plan rather than treating an included backup or snapshot as a complete independent backup.
Choose by how much you want to operate
A self-managed VPS price covers virtual-server capacity, not your time maintaining the operating system, applying security updates, monitoring services and restoring data. Keep the VM price separate from managed databases, application platforms, support or other paid operations features. Confirm the exact scope of any add-on before treating it as a substitute for administration.
How to calculate the real monthly cost
- Define the workload: list the services, expected traffic, data growth, peak concurrency and how much CPU work is sustained versus occasional.
- Set the location: choose a data-center region near the users or systems that need low latency.
- Match the server: compare vCPU, RAM, storage capacity and type, and the relevant transfer allowance. Do not equate plans on core count alone.
- Add recurring extras: include backups, extra disks, public IPs, outbound transfer overages and any required managed service or support.
- Check billing behavior: confirm whether transfer is pooled, what counts as outbound, and whether a powered-off server continues to incur charges.
- Verify the checkout total: check the selected region, currency, taxes, billing period and current availability immediately before purchase.
For an apples-to-apples comparison, use a total recurring monthly figure for each plan with the same workload assumptions. If a cost or allowance is not published for the chosen configuration, leave it unconfirmed rather than filling the gap with a guess.

What does “tested” mean in this comparison?
No servers were provisioned and no benchmarks were run for this four-provider comparison, so it does not establish a fastest provider or a controlled performance ranking. A Better Stack Community article from 2026 reports testing a DigitalOcean Basic Droplet in NYC3 and a Hetzner CPX22 in Helsinki; it explicitly notes that the different continents affect network comparisons. That is a report about those two instances and regions, not a matched test of all four providers. An OSSAlt article dated March 8, 2026 also publishes comparative prices, specifications and benchmark tables; those are that publisher’s figures and tests, not measurements from this article.
A useful performance comparison would need matched instance sizes and regions, the same workload and test dates, and published raw results. Until those conditions are met, select on verified configuration, location and total cost rather than an unsupported speed winner.
