Even with matching inputs, a hosted service may not guarantee identical output. For repeatability, control and log the full request and model configuration; for accuracy, verify important claims separately.
Why the same prompt can produce different answers
Generation can involve randomness
A language model generates text one token at a time, choosing among possible next tokens according to its learned probabilities and generation settings. When the system samples among plausible choices, an early variation can lead the rest of the answer down a different path. OpenAI describes text generation as non-deterministic by default in its prompt-engineering guidance.

That does not mean every variation is random: wording, context, model versions, and service configuration can also change the result.

Two products that accept the same visible text may use different models, instructions, or defaults. A provider may also update a model over time. OpenAI notes that snapshots within one model family can behave differently and recommends pinning a specific snapshot for production applications in its prompt-engineering guide. If you are comparing answers from different models or dates, you are not necessarily testing the same system.

Settings shape the response
Temperature and other sampling settings affect how a model chooses text. Depending on the provider and product, relevant controls may include temperature, top-p, top-k, token limits, and repetition penalties. They are not universal: parameter names and availability vary by model and interface. OpenAI’s Playground/API troubleshooting guidance recommends comparing settings such as temperature, top_p, max_tokens, frequency_penalty, and presence_penalty, and checking for presets or omitted parameters that lead to different defaults. Google likewise describes temperature alongside topP and topK in its Gemini prompting guidance.
The visible prompt may not be the whole request
In a chat app, the latest message can be only one part of the input. System or developer instructions, earlier turns, examples, uploaded files, retrieved material, and output-format requirements may affect the answer. Message roles can have different priority, and examples can steer a model. Google notes that even prompts with the same meaning but different wording can lead to different responses in its prompt design strategies.

So “I typed the same question” does not establish that the model received the same complete request. A chat product and a direct API call are not comparable unless their context, roles, tools, and defaults match.

With a hosted API, the provider controls the serving configuration and infrastructure. OpenAI’s reproducible outputs cookbook describes a system fingerprint as an identifier for the current combination of model weights, infrastructure, and other server configuration. It says that matching a seed, parameters, and fingerprint still leaves a small chance of different outputs. Exact reproducibility can therefore be difficult in a service whose configuration may change.
Does temperature zero make AI deterministic?
No universal guarantee follows from setting temperature to zero. In OpenAI’s described setup, the Help Center recommends temperature zero when troubleshooting for more consistent repeat completions. However, OpenAI’s technical guidance also says hosted generation can remain nondeterministic, and that a fixed seed is best effort rather than a promise of identical results. These statements refer to particular OpenAI interfaces and guidance; they should not be generalized to every provider or model.
If a product supports a seed, it can be useful for repeatability, but treat it as a control rather than proof that outputs will always match. Check the provider’s documentation for the exact model and endpoint you use.

How to troubleshoot inconsistent answers
- Compare the complete request. Match system and developer messages, conversation history, exact prompt text, whitespace and formatting, attached or retrieved context, and requested output format.
- Confirm the model version. Record the exact model identifier or pin a snapshot where supported. Note whether the provider’s configuration or model has changed.
- Match available generation settings. Compare temperature and any relevant sampling controls, token limits, penalties, presets, and defaults. Do not assume a chat interface exposes the same settings as an API.
- Use a seed only if supported. For best-effort repeatability, fix the seed and log it along with the model, settings, request, and provider fingerprint or version metadata when available.
- Evaluate the behavior that matters. For an application, build a representative test set and rerun it when prompts or model snapshots change. Assess correctness, safety, uncertainty handling, and format adherence—not just whether the wording is identical.
- Verify important factual claims independently. Ask for sources if useful, then check reliable primary sources yourself. A consistent answer can still be wrong.
Consistency and accuracy are different
A model can repeat the same incorrect answer, or vary between several plausible but incorrect ones. OpenAI’s reasoning best-practices guidance discusses models guessing when uncertain and the value of rewarding appropriate uncertainty rather than confident errors. Reproducibility tells you whether a system behaves similarly under controlled conditions; it does not establish that its answer is true.
How to compare two models fairly
Keep the task and prompt constant, but record the conditions that define the test: date, model identifier or snapshot, system instructions, tools, context, and generation settings. Then judge each model on the dimensions relevant to your use case:
Best Value
- Factual correctness against a trusted source or answer.
- Run-to-run consistency under the same conditions.
- Instruction-following and output-format adherence.
- Whether it flags uncertainty or unsupported assumptions instead of guessing.
- The model version and settings used for each result.
A difference in style alone does not show that one model is more accurate.
