Scientists capture fast wing movements by recording many sharply exposed video frames, then tracking visible points on the wings and body across time. The frame rate, exposure, resolution, lens, lighting and number of camera views must suit the animal and the measurement goal; no single camera setting works for every experiment.
What high-speed video reveals
A wingbeat is a rapid motion cycle. Recording at a high frame rate gives researchers more time samples through that cycle, making it possible to follow changes in wing position and shape. The frame rate is the number of frames recorded per second; it is distinct from exposure time, which is how long each frame collects light.

A shorter exposure can reduce motion blur within an image, but it also means less light reaches the sensor. Researchers therefore balance temporal detail and image sharpness against resolution, available illumination and how much of the animal must fit in the frame.

1. Define what must be measured
The goal may be to time wingbeats, follow a two-dimensional outline, or reconstruct motion in three dimensions. That choice determines how many camera views are needed, how much image detail matters and how frequently the motion must be sampled.

2. Frame the animal and wings
Camera distance, lens, focal length and aperture affect the field of view, focus and detail. The animal’s relevant body parts must remain visible and in focus throughout the movement. In one beetle study, the researchers adjusted aperture and focal length to frame the subject for their measurements.
3. Set frame rate and exposure together
The recording rate should match the motion and question. A faster rate captures more phases of a wingbeat, but does not by itself make each image sharp or detailed. Exposure time affects blur: shorter exposures can freeze motion more effectively, provided the setup supplies enough light.

- 1) Camera transfer speed is fast.
- 2) Provide SDK, easy to use and convenient.
- 3) Support external trigger and flash.
- 4) SDK supports Windows and Linux systems.
- 5) SDK supports VC/C++, VB6, VB.NET, Delphi, C#, JAVA, Python, OpenCV.
4. Make the subject trackable
Researchers may use visible landmarks, small marks on the animal, a suitable background or backlighting to make features easier to identify. The choice depends on the subject and setup; lighting must also support the selected exposure.
5. Synchronize and calibrate cameras for 3D work
To recover motion in depth, researchers record the animal from multiple viewpoints, synchronize the cameras and calibrate their positions using a calibration object or another reference procedure. A single camera view can show a projection of motion, but it does not provide the same depth information as calibrated views.

| Study subject and goal | Reported setup | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Hummingbird escape maneuver | 1,000 frames per second; 1/6,000-second shutter; three cameras; small dots marked on the bird and digitized frame by frame. Study method | Multiple views and marked points can be used to follow a maneuver. |
| Beetle flight kinematics | Four cameras at 360 frames per second and 1,664 × 1,088 pixels; four wing reference points were marked. Study method | A lower recording rate than some other examples can still serve a study-specific measurement goal. |
| Hummingbird wing deformation | At least four camera views at 2,200 Hz and 512 × 512 pixels, synchronized with a function generator; shutter time was at most 150 microseconds, depending on camera and aperture. Study method | High temporal sampling, synchronization and exposure details are considered together. |
| House-martin flight | Two cameras at 250 frames per second with a 1/1,850-second shutter; one side view and one rear view. The authors reported requiring approximately 2 kW of light. Study method | Short exposures can involve substantial lighting requirements, depending on the setup. |
| Beetle hindwing movement | Phantom V711 at 1,000 frames per second and 1,024 × 800 pixels, illuminated by four 150 W LED projector lamps. Study method | Camera resolution and lighting are part of the practical recording configuration. |
| Fly movement | Three views at 2,000 frames per second and 100 microseconds exposure, with a top view and two side views. Study method | Different viewing angles help capture motion from more than one direction. |
How to compare setups
When assessing whether a camera arrangement suits a particular study, compare the relevant capabilities together rather than choosing on frame rate alone:
Quick Recap
- Frame rate available at the resolution the experiment needs.
- Exposure or shutter capability for limiting blur.
- Light available to support the selected exposure.
- Lens and field of view for keeping the animal’s motion visible and in focus.
- Synchronization and calibration support when reconstructing three-dimensional movement.
