AI image edits can alter a face or nearby details because the model is generating or reconstructing image content in response to your instruction, rather than simply applying a guaranteed, pixel-perfect change. To keep the rest of an image recognizable, ask for one change at a time, explicitly name what must stay fixed, and use a focused mask or inpainting tool when available. These steps reduce drift, but they cannot guarantee exact preservation.
Why details change during an AI image edit
An edit model uses the source image as guidance while creating content under the edit instruction. The instruction, reference images, mask and any image-strength setting can steer what changes, but the available documentation does not say they guarantee that other details remain untouched. This is a general explanation of the controls and limitations described by the tools, not a measured cause that applies identically to every product.

Face drift is not necessarily caused by one bad prompt or setting. A broad request may leave the model room to reinterpret parts of the image, and even a localized edit may affect nearby pixels. No named study statistic establishes how often image edits alter faces or other details, so there is no reliable general rate to give.

1. Request one specific change
Describe the requested edit plainly, then list what should remain unchanged. For a portrait, that could include identity, facial features, expression, hairstyle, pose, body shape, lighting and background. For a product image, include its shape, layout and labels. OpenAI’s image-prompting guide recommends saying “change only X” and listing details to preserve, such as identity, geometry, layout, lighting or labels: OpenAI image-prompting guide.
For example: “Change only the jacket to dark green. Preserve the person’s identity and facial features, expression, hairstyle, pose, body shape, lighting and background.” A concise, scoped request makes the intended change and preservation requirements explicit; it does not guarantee the result.
2. Use the original image as the edit input
Start from the original rather than an already altered output when possible. If you supply multiple reference images, label each one’s role—for example, “edit target,” “identity reference” or “style reference”—and say what information the model should take from each. OpenAI recommends clearly assigning reference roles and checking the output against the requirements in its image-prompting guide.

3. Keep the edit area local
Use inpainting or a mask to limit the requested change to the relevant area when your tool supports it. Stability AI describes inpainting as modifying or replacing a masked region while preserving the rest of the original image, and lists correcting face artifacts as one use: Stability AI’s inpainting guide.
A mask is a guide, not a perfect boundary. OpenAI notes that its mask guidance is prompt-based and may not follow the exact mask shape. After each edit, inspect the edge of the masked area and nearby features for unwanted changes: OpenAI’s image-generation guide.

4. Adjust image strength cautiously, if available
Some image-to-image tools expose an image-strength control that influences how much the source image guides the output. Its meaning and behavior depend on the product and endpoint. In a Stability AI API reference example, an image-strength setting of 0.35 is described as preserving roughly 35% of the initial image. That is an endpoint-specific example, not a universal setting or a promise about how much of a particular image will remain: Stability AI API reference.
If your tool offers a similar setting, make small adjustments and compare results on the same image. Do not assume another product’s slider uses the same scale or has the same effect.

5. Iterate with one correction at a time
Review each output against the details you asked to preserve. If a face or another feature drifts, make one corrective edit and restate the specific preservation requirements. Check the face, geometry, labels and nearby areas before accepting the result rather than judging only the changed region.

6. Protect pixels that must not change
If exact identity or pixel-level preservation is essential, use an approach that leaves protected pixels untouched, or finish with conventional manual compositing or retouching. Generative editing controls can guide a change, but the cited product documentation does not establish a universal guarantee that they will preserve every unmasked detail exactly.

Choosing an editing approach
There is no head-to-head product test here that establishes a best tool for preserving faces. When evaluating an editor, check whether it offers:
- Localized masks or inpainting for limiting the edit area.
- Image references and instructions that let you specify each reference’s role.
- A source-image-strength control, with documentation explaining what it does.
- A practical way to compare results on your own representative images, including faces and nearby details.
Adobe documents using text and drawing tools to guide AI edits in Photoshop. Visual markup is therefore one available workflow, but that documentation does not establish that markup preserves identity better than other methods: Adobe Photoshop help.
