The right Switch 2 accessories depend on what you need: a case for the console or a bag for the full TV setup, a compatible microSD Express card for more game storage, a spare AC adapter for another location, or controllers that suit how you play. Before buying, check compatibility: original Switch microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games, the original dock cannot be used with Switch 2, and original Joy-Con controllers cannot attach to or charge on the new console.
Check compatibility before buying
Some original Switch accessories work only in limited ways with Switch 2. Nintendo’s support pages detail the differences for microSD cards and controllers, docks, adapters, and HDMI cables.

- Original microSD cards: They cannot load or save digital games on Switch 2. The console can use them to import original Switch screenshots and videos.
- Original Switch AC adapter: It can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but cannot supply enough power for TV mode.
- Original Switch dock: It is not compatible with Switch 2. The HDMI cable included with the original console is also incompatible; use the Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable included with Switch 2.
- Original Joy-Con: They can connect wirelessly, but cannot attach to Switch 2 or charge on it. They need a compatible original Switch console or charging accessory to recharge.
- Original Switch Pro Controller: It can pair wirelessly and charge by USB through the Switch 2 dock.
Choose a case for your setup
Nintendo’s US catalog lists two official cases, with different jobs. The compact option protects the console for travel; the all-in-one option is for carrying the TV-mode equipment too. Those descriptions apply to Nintendo’s listed cases. They do not establish that third-party cases have the same fit or protection, so check a case’s stated Switch 2 compatibility and what it is designed to hold before ordering.

Pick a microSD Express card for more storage
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, and Nintendo’s specifications support microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. For game data, screenshots, and videos on an expansion card, the format matters: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards,” Nintendo Support says. The official US accessory catalog lists a Samsung 256 GB microSD Express card.
Do not choose a card just because it is microSD or microSDXC: a conventional card from the original Switch cannot store Switch 2 games. If you already own one, its supported role is importing original Switch screenshots and videos, not expanding playable game storage. The first time you use a microSD Express card, Switch 2 requires an internet system update.

- Choose capacity based on how many digital games and other files you want stored on the card at once.
- Verify that the card is explicitly marked microSD Express.
- Compare current price per capacity when shopping; Nintendo’s catalog listing does not establish a current price, comparative performance across brands, or a value winner.

Decide whether you need another charger or dock
A Switch 2 AC Adapter is included with the system, so a second one is a replacement or convenience purchase—not a requirement for every owner. Nintendo lists it as an adapter for the console or dock and says it includes the USB-C charging cable. It can be useful if you want a charger at another play location.

If you want Switch 2 connected to a second TV, Nintendo lists a separate Switch 2 Dock Set with a dock, AC adapter, USB-C cable, and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. The original Switch dock cannot substitute for it. Likewise, although the original Switch adapter can charge Switch 2 when plugged directly into the console, it cannot power TV mode.
Check Nintendo’s accessory catalog for the adapter and dock-set listings. For cable setup, Nintendo says the HDMI cable packaged with the original Switch is incompatible because the standards differ; use the Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable that came with Switch 2.

Choose controllers by fit, features, and charging
Nintendo’s catalog includes Joy-Con 2 and a Switch 2 Pro Controller. Original Switch controllers remain useful in some circumstances, but their connection and charging limits matter if you expect to use them as a complete substitute.

Compare the shape and features you prefer, whether you need controllers to attach to the console, and how you want to charge them. Wireless compatibility does not mean every game supports every controller feature; check the individual game’s support information if a particular feature matters. Nintendo’s accessory catalog lists the Switch 2 controllers, and its compatibility guidance covers original Switch controllers.

What to buy first
- For portable protection: Choose the carrying case with screen protector if you only need a compact console case, or the all-in-one case if you want to carry dock and accessories too.
- For more game storage: Buy a card explicitly marked microSD Express; conventional Switch cards are not game-storage substitutes.
- For charging: Use the included adapter unless you need a spare or replacement. For another TV location, look at the Switch 2 Dock Set.
- For controllers: Consider Joy-Con 2 or the Switch 2 Pro Controller based on how you play. Keep original Joy-Con’s attachment and charging limitations in mind.
