AI can often name familiar objects in a photo, but a correct label does not mean it has understood the scene. Research finds specific weaknesses in judging spatial relationships, counting or separating objects, and handling unexpected contexts; models can also mention objects that are not present. These are task-dependent failures, not evidence that every model misreads every image.
What does it mean for AI to identify an object?
“Identify” can describe several different tasks. A model may classify an object as a dog, detect where a dog appears, describe its relationship to another object, count how many dogs are present, or mention objects in a free-form caption. Success at one task does not establish success at the others.

- Presence and classification: Is the object in the image, and is its label correct?
- Position and relationships: Is it on, under, beside, or to the left or right of another object?
- Counting and separation: How many instances are there, and can the model distinguish them?
- Context: Does recognition hold when an object appears in an unusual setting, or when a plausible object is absent?
- Hallucination: Does a generated description introduce an object that the image does not show?
Because studies test different tasks, datasets, model versions, and scoring methods, their results should not be treated as one universal measure of how well AI “sees.”

Can AI reliably tell left from right?
Not always. The What’sUp study tested spatial relations by changing relationships while holding object identities fixed, including familiar arrangements such as one object being on or under another. The models therefore had to get the relationship right rather than rely only on recognizing the objects.

In that study, BLIP fine-tuned on VQAv2 achieved 56% accuracy on the What’sUp benchmarks, compared with 99% for human participants. The authors evaluated 18 vision-language models and reported poor performance across them. These figures describe the study’s benchmarks and tested models; they are not general accuracy rates for current AI systems or arbitrary photos. Read the What’sUp paper.
Why can a fluent answer still be wrong?
A vision-language system connects visual features to language generation. A polished sentence can obscure whether the weak point was extracting a feature from the image, connecting that feature to the language model, or producing a response that faithfully reflects the visual evidence. The 2025 paper Response Wide Shut examines object classification, spatial arrangement, and counting, probing visual-encoder features and the projection connecting vision features to language generation across several model designs. It is an analysis of those tasks and systems, not a reported failure rate for consumer photo apps. Read the paper.

Why might AI describe an object that is not there?
Researchers measure this as object hallucination: a generated description includes an object that is not supported by the image. It is different from simply failing to name an object that is present. THRONE proposes an object-based framework for evaluating hallucinations in free-form outputs and argues that existing metrics and benchmarks do not capture the problem completely. Does unusual context make recognition harder?
It can. The CVPR 2026 ORIC study examines contextual incongruity: objects appearing in unexpected contexts, as well as plausible objects that are absent. The authors evaluate 18 large vision-language models and two open-vocabulary detectors, reporting increased difficulty and bias on their benchmark under incongruous contexts. This is evidence about that benchmark and those evaluated systems, not a claim that every unusual photo defeats AI. Read the ORIC paper.
How should you check an AI identification?
For a low-stakes description, an occasional mistake may be tolerable. If the identification matters, treat the model’s answer as a claim to check rather than a verdict.

- Look at the relevant image detail yourself. Check the object or feature the answer names, rather than relying on the overall fluency of the description.
- Ask a narrower question. Focus on a visible feature or a specific relationship, such as whether one object appears to be on or under another. A narrower prompt is not a guarantee of accuracy.
- Seek independent confirmation when consequences matter. Do not rely on a generated description alone for consequential identification.
These precautions follow from documented benchmark failures; they have not been established here as a validated method for improving model accuracy.

What these studies do—and do not—tell you
The papers show that object labels, spatial reasoning, counting, performance in unusual contexts, and hallucination are distinct evaluation problems. A result on one does not settle the others. They also do not provide a directly comparable ranking of current consumer photo-recognition apps, so they cannot establish which app is most accurate. Model releases and evaluations change; read each result in the context of the specific benchmark and systems tested.
