Closing a Microsoft account cuts off access to services tied to it, including Outlook.com, OneDrive, Xbox and Microsoft Store purchases. It is not immediate: Microsoft offers a 30- or 60-day period to reopen the account. After that period expires, Microsoft says it deletes the account’s data and content. If your goal is only to stop Microsoft 365 billing, cancel the subscription instead; that is a separate action with different effects.
What happens when you close a Microsoft account?
Microsoft calls account removal “closing” an account. During the closure process, you choose a 30- or 60-day reopen window. You can reverse the decision during that period by signing in and entering a security code. When the window passes, Microsoft says the account cannot be reopened and its data and content are deleted. Microsoft’s account-closure guidance and reopening guidance describe the process.

Closing an account affects more than the email address: you lose access to Microsoft services associated with that account, and saved BitLocker recovery keys become inaccessible. The precise outcome for individual purchases or licenses is not universal; see the purchase section below.
How to mark the account for closure
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to close. If you cannot sign in, use Microsoft’s sign-in helper first; signing in is required for the closure process.
- Verify your identity if prompted, then check the account displayed so you do not close the wrong one.
- Review and acknowledge the effects listed on the closure page, choose a 30- or 60-day reopen period, select a reason, and mark the account for closure.
If you have reset all sign-in verification details, Microsoft says you must wait 60 days before closing the account. Microsoft’s guidance for that situation explains the delay.

What happens to Outlook.com email and contacts?
Closing the Microsoft account also closes its Outlook.com email account. Microsoft says email and contacts are deleted from its servers and cannot be recovered. Save anything you need before marking the account for closure. Microsoft’s Outlook.com closure page covers this effect.
What happens to OneDrive files?
Once the account is closed, you can no longer access OneDrive through it; Microsoft’s closure policy says the account’s data and content are deleted after the reopen window ends. Download or move files you need before starting closure. Do not treat the 30- or 60-day window as a backup plan: access and deletion depend on the account’s closure status and Microsoft’s stated policy.

What happens to Microsoft Store, Xbox and Office purchases?
Microsoft identifies services such as Xbox, Office, Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Store as tied to a personal Microsoft account. Closing it removes access to those services. Microsoft says profiles and purchased content can be available again if you reopen the account within the grace period, but its general guidance does not establish a universal transfer process, refund entitlement or post-closure rule for every game, movie, license or other purchase.
Before closure, identify which Microsoft account was used for each purchase and check the applicable product or seller terms. Do not assume content can be transferred to another account or that closing the account produces a refund. Microsoft’s account-linked services guidance and its reopening information describe the general access and recovery position.

Closing an account is not the same as canceling Microsoft 365
If you want to stop recurring Microsoft 365 charges but keep your Microsoft account, cancel the subscription rather than closing the account. The effects differ:
| Decision | What changes | Timing and recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Close the Microsoft account | Access to linked services ends; account data and content are deleted after the selected reopen window. | Microsoft offers a 30- or 60-day period to reopen the account; after it expires, Microsoft says it cannot be reopened. |
| Cancel Microsoft 365 | The account remains, but subscription benefits end and storage allowances change. Microsoft states the post-cancellation cloud-storage allowance is 5 GB, including OneDrive and Outlook attachments, and Outlook.com storage is 15 GB. | Cancellation does not itself close the account. If usage is above the free allowance, uploads, editing or syncing may stop, and email may not send or arrive. Microsoft says it may delete OneDrive and its files after six months if usage remains above the allowance. |
These storage limits and the possible six-month OneDrive deletion are Microsoft’s stated cancellation policy, not the voluntary account-closure countdown. Review Microsoft’s current Microsoft 365 cancellation guidance before making a decision.

Check subscriptions and billing before closure
Review active subscriptions and recurring payments before closing the account. Where you bought the subscription determines who handles cancellation: Microsoft says subscriptions purchased through Apple’s App Store or Google Play must be managed through those stores, while third-party retail purchases must be handled with the seller. Not every cancellation results in a refund. See Microsoft’s subscription cancellation guidance.

Microsoft advises Skype users to use any remaining Skype Credit and cancel active subscriptions before closing the account; it warns that auto-recharge can continue charging until permanent closure if the subscription is not canceled first. Do not confuse closure with inactivity
Voluntary closure has a user-selected 30- or 60-day reopen window. Microsoft also has separate inactivity policies. Its general account activity policy says most accounts need a sign-in at least once every two years to remain active, subject to exceptions including some purchases and subscriptions. That policy was published July 1, 2019, took effect August 30, 2019, and was updated November 6, 2020. Read Microsoft’s activity policy for its exceptions.
A separate Microsoft page for deceased or incapacitated account holders describes Outlook.com and OneDrive accounts being frozen after one year, with email and files deleted shortly after, and account expiration after two years of inactivity. Those timeframes apply to the inactivity guidance in that context, not to the voluntary closure process. See Microsoft’s deceased or incapacitated user guidance.
