AI data centers need so much electricity because they run dense fleets of power-hungry accelerated servers to train and operate AI models—and must also power the cooling and other infrastructure that keeps those servers running. The load is growing quickly, and where facilities cluster can matter to the local grid even when data centers remain a modest share of global electricity use.
What uses the electricity inside an AI data center?
The biggest AI-specific load is computing: accelerated servers perform the calculations used to train models and answer requests from people and software. Packing many such servers into a facility increases its power demand. The servers are not the whole bill, however: networking, storage, cooling, power systems and other infrastructure also consume electricity.
In its 2025 base-case analysis, the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that accelerated servers will account for almost half of the net increase in data-center electricity consumption through 2030. Conventional servers contribute around 20% of that increase, other IT equipment around 10%, and cooling plus other infrastructure around 20%. These are projections about the sources of growth across data centers, not metered shares for every individual facility. IEA, Energy and AI: Energy demand from AI
How large is data-center electricity use, and how fast is it growing?
The IEA estimates that data centers used 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity worldwide in 2024, about 1.5% of global electricity consumption. Its 2025 report’s base case projects about 945 TWh in 2030, a little under 3% of global consumption in that scenario. The 2030 figure is a forecast, not a measured outcome. A later IEA update reports that data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, while global electricity demand grew 3%; AI-focused centers grew faster than the data-center average. That update says data-center use is set to double by 2030 and AI-center power use to triple. These are the 2026 update’s projections, distinct from the 945 TWh base-case forecast published in 2025; the estimates come from different report vintages and should not be treated as the same scenario. Why does a small global share still affect local power systems?
Data centers are concentrated geographically, so a global percentage can hide pressure on particular grids. In 2024, the United States accounted for 45% of global data-center electricity consumption, China for 25%, and Europe for 15%, according to the IEA’s 2025 executive summary. Nearly half of US data-center capacity was concentrated in five regional clusters. Those figures describe concentration, not the load or grid conditions at any specific site. Power infrastructure can also take longer to plan and build than a data center. The IEA says a data center can become operational within two to three years, while energy infrastructure has longer lead times. Its 2025 analysis identifies long grid-connection queues and estimates that around 20% of planned data-center projects could risk delay unless grid risks are addressed. This is a risk assessment, not a prediction that any particular project will be delayed. IEA, Energy and AI: Energy demand from AI
How does a data center compare with a power plant or household use?
Facility power is often described in megawatts (MW), a measure of how much power a site can draw at a given time. Annual consumption is measured in units such as TWh. They are related, but not interchangeable: actual annual electricity use depends on how much power a facility draws and for how long.

The IEA describes traditional data centers as using 10–25 MW, while hyperscale AI centers can exceed 100 MW. Its illustrative household-equivalence comparisons assume a 25 MW conventional facility, a 100 MW hyperscale facility and around 2,000 MW for the largest facility under construction discussed on its topic page. These are capacity comparisons with specified assumptions, not universal annual-use figures for all facilities. IEA, Artificial Intelligence
Does more efficient AI mean electricity use will fall?
Not necessarily. The IEA says electricity consumption per AI task is declining rapidly, but the number of users and energy-intensive applications such as AI agents are increasing. If the growth in activity outweighs the electricity saved per task, total demand can rise even as each task becomes more efficient. Efficiency per task alone does not establish that overall data-center electricity consumption will decline. IEA, 2026 update

Where can the electricity come from, and what helps manage the load?
The IEA’s 2025 outlook says renewables and natural gas are expected to lead in meeting projected data-center demand, with nuclear and other sources also contributing. That is a projected overall supply mix, not a description of every data center’s electricity source. IEA, Energy and AI: Executive summary
The 2026 update reports that developers are pursuing onsite gas generation where grid access is slow. It also warns that rapid, large swings in AI data-center demand can stretch the technical capabilities of onsite gas plants, and describes onsite battery storage as a critical technology for the next generation of AI facilities. These are reported responses and concerns, not evidence that every facility has onsite generation or batteries. IEA, 2026 update

What to keep in mind when comparing estimates
- Check whether a number describes measured consumption or a future scenario, and note when that scenario was published.
- Do not confuse absolute use in TWh with a share of global electricity, or a facility’s power capacity in MW with its annual consumption.
- Global totals describe the overall scale; local concentration determines where grid effects may be most acute.
- Forecasts depend on factors including AI adoption, efficiency improvements and energy-infrastructure bottlenecks.
