If you want to see a supported garment on a person, Google Shopping’s Try On is the more direct choice. If you are still deciding what to buy and want to search conversationally, browse visually, and compare product details side by side, ChatGPT’s documented shopping experience is better suited to that task. Neither service’s generated images should be treated as a guarantee of fit or sizing.
What’s the difference between ChatGPT shopping and Google Shopping Try On?
They address different stages of shopping. Google’s Try On workflow applies an eligible clothing item to a person’s image or a model preview. ChatGPT’s shopping experience helps you discover and compare products using conversation, visual browsing, and product details. OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 announcement describes uploading an image for inspiration to find similar products, but does not describe a dedicated workflow that places a listed garment on a photo of the shopper. OpenAI’s product-discovery announcement describes the ChatGPT experience.

| What you want to do | More direct option | What the cited feature supports |
|---|---|---|
| Preview a particular eligible garment on a person | Google Shopping Try On | Apply a supported listing to a full-length photo, or use available model previews; a U.S. selfie-to-full-body option was also announced. |
| Explore styles and compare product details | ChatGPT shopping | Describe preferences, refine the search conversationally, browse products visually, and compare price, reviews, and features side by side. |
How does Google Shopping Try On work?
For supported listings, Google’s instructions say to select the Try It On control, upload a full-length photo, and view the result. From there, shoppers can save or share the image, or browse similar styles. The documented categories include shirts, pants, dresses, and shoes. Google also describes previews using diverse models. Its December 2025 U.S. announcement introduced another path: Gemini 2.5 Flash Image can create a full-body digital version from a selfie. Google’s Try It On instructions and its December 2025 announcement explain these options.
Availability depends on country and listing
Google’s rollout announcements describe different markets and dates, not a universal catalog. A May 6, 2026 announcement said the feature was available in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, for tops, pants, dresses, and shoes. In the U.S., Google’s March 2025 post described expanding the available categories from tops and dresses to pants and skirts, with model sizes XXS–XXL. The original June 2023 U.S. launch covered women’s tops, but that initial scope should not be mistaken for today’s global offering. See Google’s Latin America availability announcement, March 2025 U.S. update, and June 2023 launch announcement.

Even in a market where Try On has rolled out, not every product qualifies. Look for the Try On control on the individual listing; the announcement of regional availability does not establish that every item or category is eligible for every shopper.
When is ChatGPT shopping more useful?
ChatGPT’s documented advantage is product discovery rather than garment-on-you visualization. You can describe what you want and refine the request in conversation, browse product imagery, and compare options by details such as price, reviews, and features. You can also upload an image as inspiration to look for similar items—for example, asking for short-sleeve button-downs like the one pictured. OpenAI said the update was rolling out to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users during the week of March 24, 2026; access and interface details can change.

Choose this workflow when you have not settled on a particular item or want help narrowing a broad set of options. The cited OpenAI description does not establish an equivalent dedicated feature for applying a listed garment to your own photo, so product browsing and try-on preview should not be treated as interchangeable capabilities.

What can an outfit preview tell you—and what can’t it?
A generated image can help you imagine how a style might look on a person. It does not, by itself, establish how a garment will fit, feel, drape, or look in person, or whether a particular size is right for you. The cited feature descriptions do not provide evidence that either service predicts fit or sizing reliably, reproduces fabric behavior or exact color, or reduces returns.

Google has reported engagement figures for its try-on images, but they are not accuracy measures. In Google’s internal U.S. Shopping data from August 2024, virtual try-on images received 60% more high-quality views than other shopping images; Google also said shoppers tried clothes using an average of four models per product. Those results describe engagement, not fit accuracy or fewer returns. Google’s September 2024 announcement provides the figures and describes the feature as a way to visualize dresses on models.
For context on why shoppers may value varied representations, Google reported that a 2023 U.S. survey of 1,614 online clothing shoppers found 42% did not feel represented by model images and 59% had been dissatisfied with an online clothing item because it looked different than expected. These are Google/Ipsos survey results for that sample and date, not universal or current rates. Google’s June 2023 post attributes the findings to the survey.

How should you choose between them?
- Start with Google Try On when you have a specific supported listing and want a visual preview on a person. Check for the Try On control and the available photo or model options.
- Start with ChatGPT shopping when you need to discover products, refine preferences through conversation, or compare details across options.
- Use a retailer’s product information for fit decisions. Check the size chart, garment measurements, materials, and return terms rather than relying on a generated image to predict how an item will fit.
There is no independent head-to-head evidence in the cited official sources showing which service produces more realistic previews, predicts fit better, or reduces returns. The practical distinction is the documented task: Google offers a try-on workflow for eligible items, while ChatGPT’s cited shopping update focuses on finding and comparing products.
