The evidence points to a more specific shift: Google and other project partners are developing grid-scale, long-duration energy storage to help deliver renewable electricity over longer periods. Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery is one such technology, designed for 8–24 hours of discharge. It complements shorter-duration storage; it is not a drop-in replacement for a data center’s onsite backup batteries.
What the CO2 Battery is—and what it is not
Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery is an industrial, grid-scale energy-storage system, not a chemical battery pack. It stores energy through a closed thermo-mechanical cycle: electricity compresses carbon dioxide from a low-pressure dome and stores it under pressure; when electricity is needed, the CO2 is evaporated and expanded through a turbine to generate power. Energy Dome says the standard system is designed to provide firm, dispatchable capacity for 8–24 hours. Energy Dome’s product description sets out the company’s design and performance claims.

The word “battery” describes its role—storing energy and returning electricity—not its chemistry. Its large-scale equipment and grid role make it different from the backup battery systems installed at individual data centers.

Why long-duration storage matters to data centers
Data centers need dependable electricity, while wind and solar generation vary with weather and time of day. Storage can shift renewable electricity from when it is generated to when it is needed. Google frames long-duration storage as one option for bridging that gap and addressing growing data-center demand, alongside a broader set of energy technologies and strategies. Google’s explanation of its energy approach also refers to data-center demand response.

Duration is the key distinction in the public comparison. Google says lithium-ion batteries typically store and dispatch power for four hours or less, and describes them as critical for grid capacity and short-term fluctuations in renewable generation. That is not a claim that lithium-ion is obsolete; it describes a common role for it and the need for additional options when longer discharge periods are useful. Google’s July 2025 announcement presents long-duration storage as part of a wider portfolio.
What the project announcements actually show
Google announced a long-term partnership with Energy Dome on July 25, 2025, to support multiple commercial projects globally. Google said the CO2 Battery could dispatch stored renewable energy for 8–24 hours. The announcement establishes a partnership and planned commercial activity—not widespread deployment or a withdrawal from lithium-ion. Google’s announcement and Energy Dome’s partnership announcement describe the plans.

- Sell the case ONLY! Made of EVA material, the semi-hard case is light and shockproof, keeping your CO2 cartridges safe and clean. A bright and striking green color helps you find it in your sight more easily. You won’t miss any wonderful moments.
- The case can organize 40 CO2 cartridges well in total. It is a good solution for both storage and carrying. The diameter of each slot is 0.75 inches, perfect for most 12-gram cartridges on the market, like Crosman and Umarex.
- Different from other cases protected by sponge, our shell and slots are one piece. Hollow design makes the inside uneasy to deform and more stable. Additionally, the grooves at the bottom can add stability, avoiding shakes, leakages and noises. While keeping CO2 stable and pure, it guarantees your shooting number.
- With large capacity, the cuboid case measures 9.25x6.1x3.26inches, allowing you to immerse yourself in enjoying airguns outside. The dark colors typically boast superior stain resistance, effectively hiding marks from outdoor use.
- The pale golden nylon zipper is smooth, offering enhanced durability and corrosion resistance. The retro zipper head is bronzed with an antique finish, which has better color fixation performance and hand feeling.
| Project | Announced capacity and duration | What the announcement says |
|---|---|---|
| Coronado Generating Station site, St. Johns, Arizona | 19 MW for 10 hours | Energy Dome and SRP announced a planned project on June 15, 2026, under a 20-year tolling agreement. Energy Dome is to own and operate the facility; SRP is to dispatch its output. Project announcement |
| Former thermal power station near Rhode, County Offaly, Ireland | 23 MW / 200 MWh | Google announced the project with Energy Dome in 2026. Google’s Ireland project announcement |
| Columbia Energy Storage Project, Wisconsin | Designed to supply about 18,000 homes for 10 hours on a charge | Alliant Energy says construction is expected to begin in 2026 and completion is expected by the end of 2027. These are the company’s forecasts, not verified milestones. Alliant Energy’s project page |
These examples are grid-scale storage projects. The Arizona announcement, in particular, describes a utility-dispatched facility at a power-station site; it does not say a data center is replacing its onsite backup batteries. The announcements therefore support a story about grid power strategy and long-duration storage, not a proven industry-wide switch in data-center backup systems.
How the efficiency and lifespan claims should be read
Energy Dome’s standard CO2 Battery product page claims 70% or higher net round-trip efficiency, more than 30 years of operating life, and no capacity degradation. Those are the company’s stated specifications; the available project announcements do not establish that they are independently audited results demonstrated across commercial installations. Energy Dome also publishes a comparison table that gives lithium-ion 85% round-trip efficiency, a lifetime under 12 years, CAPEX 1.7 times as high, and depth of discharge under 80%. These are vendor comparison claims, not a neutral market benchmark. Cost and performance depend on project duration, duty cycle, design, financing, and consistent system boundaries; the figures alone do not show that one technology is cheaper or better for every application. Energy Dome’s comparison
Why CO2 Battery Plus is a separate comparison
CO2 Battery Plus is not simply the standard system with a better efficiency number. Energy Dome describes Plus as a configuration coupled to open-cycle gas turbines: during discharge, it uses the turbines’ exhaust heat rather than relying only on heat stored during charging. The company advertises efficiency above 115% for Plus, but that figure includes external waste heat in the system boundary. It is not directly comparable to the standalone system’s electrical round-trip efficiency. Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery Plus description

A useful comparison starts with the job the system must do, not the word “battery.” Buyers and planners should compare:
- Discharge duration: Is the need for a short backup interval, several hours of grid balancing, or longer dispatch?
- System boundary and efficiency: Are both figures measured on the same basis, and does either system use external heat?
- Lifecycle economics: What are the costs for the specific duration, duty cycle, project design, and financing—not just a vendor’s headline comparison?
- Operating life and degradation: Are the claims independently demonstrated for installations comparable to the proposed project?
- Where the system connects: Is it onsite backup, behind-the-meter supply, or grid-connected storage dispatched by a utility?
The public announcements establish interest in grid-scale long-duration storage, including projects connected to Google’s energy strategy. They do not establish that AI data centers generally are abandoning lithium-ion, nor do they provide an independent apples-to-apples cost verdict between the technologies.
