Interruption gives a person time to spot a misunderstanding, review a consequential action, or contain a problem. It works best as part of a control system that also makes the agent’s plans and actions visible, sets clear approval points, and limits access to tools and data.
Why is a pause button important for AI agents?
An agent can act across multiple steps, use connected tools, and continue working after a person has delegated a task. If its assumptions are wrong, the error may compound before anyone notices. A reliable interruption mechanism gives an operator a chance to inspect the work and correct its direction before more actions occur.

Microsoft Learn recommends system-level mechanisms to pause or stop agents safely and immediately, alongside approvals for high-risk or irreversible actions. It also recommends showing plans before execution, providing real-time status, summarizing outcomes, and keeping logs that support review and incident response. Those controls answer a practical question: not only “Can I stop it?” but “Can I see what it is doing, and what will happen if I do?” Microsoft Learn’s agentic AI risk guidance treats visibility, permissions, approvals, and safe stopping as complementary safeguards.
What is the difference between pausing, interrupting, and stopping?
These terms are useful distinctions, not universal technical standards; an individual system may implement them differently.

- Pause: Suspends a run, often preserving enough state for a person to review it before deciding whether it should continue.
- Interrupt: Lets a person break into the current activity to correct or change what the agent is doing.
- Stop or shut down: Aims to halt the agent’s continued operation rather than hold the run for review.
A control is only as useful as its scope and behavior. It matters whether it stops one action or the whole run, whether pending tool calls are cancelled, whether context is preserved, and whether connected tools or spawned sub-agents continue independently.
Should an agent ask before every action?
No. Requiring approval at every step can strip away the autonomy that makes an agent useful; letting it push through every ambiguity can make it misread the user’s intent. Anthropic describes this tension in its discussion of trustworthy agents: the goal is to ask at points where a human decision adds meaningful value, not to maximize interruptions.

Useful approval or pause points include unclear instructions, actions with substantial or irreversible effects, an unexpected change in task scope, or signs that the agent may be acting unsafely. Routine, low-impact steps can proceed under the permissions and limits already set. The right balance depends on the task, the agent’s autonomy, and the consequences of an error.

How should an interruption system be designed?
Assess a pause control as part of the wider workflow, not as a button in isolation. The following questions help expose gaps before the agent is given more freedom:

- Trigger: Can the user intervene, must the agent request approval, can uncertainty trigger a pause, and can a policy condition stop progress?
- Scope: Does the control affect one action, the current run, connected tools, and any sub-agents?
- State handling: Does suspension leave the system in a safe state, preserve relevant context, cancel pending actions, and support a controlled resume?
- Visibility: Can the operator see the plan, current activity, tool calls, and actions already taken?
- Authority: Who can pause, resume, or shut down the agent, and can the right person reach that control during an incident?
- Risk calibration: Do safeguards tighten for high-impact or irreversible actions without needlessly blocking routine work?
Stopping delegated work deserves particular attention. OpenAI’s governance paper discusses the challenge of extending interruptibility to sub-agents; that is a governance concern, not a guarantee that every current platform can halt every descendant process. OpenAI’s paper on governing agentic AI systems is useful for framing that issue.
What does human review and resume look like in practice?
One documented pattern is to suspend execution until a human submits a decision. MongoDB Atlas Agent Engine describes a workflow in which an agent calls a human-review tool, execution suspends, relevant context is surfaced to a reviewer, and the agent resumes only after the reviewer submits a decision. MongoDB’s Agent Engine documentation provides a concrete example of this review-and-resume approach.

That example shows how a pause can be built into a workflow; it does not establish that every framework’s pause primitive blocks all side effects. Before relying on any implementation, operators need to understand what continues during suspension, what state is retained, and which tools or delegated processes remain active.
What do standards and guidance say about oversight?
The European Union’s AI Act addresses human oversight for high-risk AI systems—not every AI agent or use case. Article 14 says oversight measures should be commensurate with the risks, level of autonomy, and context of use. The European Commission AI Act Service Desk displays the consolidated text as of 27 July 2026, including language allowing a person to intervene or interrupt the operation through a stop button or similar procedure that brings the system to a safe state. Australia’s National AI Centre also offers general organizational guidance on intervention points and oversight proportionate to autonomy and stakes. These sources have different scopes: the EU text concerns high-risk systems under the Act, while organizational guidance helps frame broader decisions about how much human oversight a particular deployment needs. What can observed agent behavior tell us about asking for help?
Anthropic reports that its analysis covered 500,000 interactive Claude Code sessions and found clarification questions occurred more than twice as often on the most complex tasks as on minimal-complexity tasks. This is company-reported, product-specific evidence—not an independent measurement of AI agents generally. Anthropic also cautions that the model may not pause at the right times and that product features can affect the observed behavior. The analysis is a reminder that agent-initiated questions can complement human interruption, but they are not a substitute for a dependable control.
