A USB peripheral port is the connection point on a peripheral—the device attached to a computer or hub. In USB role terminology, that device-side connection is typically an upstream-facing port: it connects toward a host or hub. The term alone does not tell you the connector shape, data speed, or power capability.
What does “USB peripheral port” mean?
A port is a connection point. NIST defines a port generally as “the entry or exit point from a computer for connecting communications or peripheral devices.” In the phrase “USB peripheral port,” peripheral describes the device’s place in the connection; it does not name a particular USB connector.

The exact phrase is best treated as plain-language wording rather than a complete technical specification. For precise USB roles, USB-IF uses the terms upstream-facing port and downstream-facing port.
How does it relate to USB host and hub ports?
In a typical connection, the host’s downstream-facing port connects toward the peripheral’s upstream-facing port. USB-IF defines an upstream port in its OTG and Embedded Host supplement as “A port used to connect to a host or a hub.” Its terminology also identifies a B-port as an upstream port.

- ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
- DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to minimize interference
A hub sits between the host and peripheral: it has an upstream connection toward the host and downstream connections toward attached devices. USB-IF compliance guidance describes a standard USB 2.0 downstream port as a port on a host or hub under the USB 2.0 specification.
There is a role-based qualification: an OTG device’s port can operate as either downstream or upstream, depending on the role it takes in the connection. So “peripheral port” describes the device’s role in a particular connection, not necessarily a permanent role for every port in every operating mode.

What the term does—and does not—tell you
- It indicates a connection point: the port is where the peripheral connects to the USB system.
- It does not identify connector shape: the phrase does not establish that the port is USB-A, USB-B, Micro-USB, USB-C, or another connector.
- It does not specify speed or compatibility: those depend on the particular product and applicable USB specification.
- It does not guarantee charging performance: available power depends on the port, device, operating mode, and relevant specification.
Keep the port’s role separate from its connector, data capability, and power features. A connector’s appearance alone is not enough to establish what the product supports.
How much power can a USB peripheral port provide?
There is no single power figure implied by the phrase. USB-IF’s compliance guidance gives examples for standard downstream ports: a peripheral on a standard USB 2.0 downstream port is limited to 500 mA; a USB 3.0 peripheral on a standard USB 3.0 downstream port is limited to 900 mA; and a USB 2.0 peripheral on a standard USB 3.0 downstream port remains limited to 500 mA.

These figures apply to those specified standard-port cases. They are not universal limits for every USB charging arrangement or USB Power Delivery connection. Check the device and host specifications for the actual power capabilities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a USB peripheral port the same as a USB device?
No. A port is a connection point; a device is the equipment attached through it. USB-IF’s class-code reference describes functions such as human interface devices (HID), printers, mass storage, and hubs. Those categories identify device functionality, not a universal port or connector type.
