If a WhatsApp chat is locked, a notification that says only “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message” is usually expected: Chat Lock hides the conversation’s name and message details for privacy. If no alert arrives at all, that is a different problem. Check whether the chat is muted, then review WhatsApp’s notification permission and your phone’s background-data and battery settings.
First, tell a hidden notification from a missing one
“Restricted chat” may refer to WhatsApp’s Chat Lock feature; the wording can vary by language. Chat Lock moves a conversation into a protected folder and hides its identifying details in notifications. Meta’s 2023 Chat Lock announcement says locking a chat automatically hides conversation details in notifications. WhatsApp’s current help guidance likewise describes generic notification text such as “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message.”

Chat Lock’s documented behavior is to conceal notification identity and content; it is not evidence that the feature itself blocks message alerts. Keep privacy redaction separate from a failure to deliver an alert.

This is the expected privacy behavior for a locked chat, not necessarily a notification failure. You can keep the conversation locked and accept the generic alert, or unlock it to restore visible details. WhatsApp’s notification guidance describes unlocking from the chat list: press and hold the chat, then choose Unlock chat. You may need to authenticate, depending on your device and settings.

Unlock only if you are comfortable reducing the extra privacy protection for that conversation. Unlocking changes whether its details are hidden; it should not be treated as a remedy for a notification that never arrives.
If no notification arrives while WhatsApp is in the background
WhatsApp distinguishes push notifications—alerts received when the app is closed or in the background—from notifications shown while you are using the app. Push alerts can be affected by phone notification permissions, background data, and battery restrictions. Menu names vary by device and operating-system version, so use these checks as a guide rather than assuming every phone has identical controls.

- Allow WhatsApp notifications at the phone level. Open your device’s notification settings, find WhatsApp, and make sure notifications are allowed. If your phone offers notification categories or channels, check that the relevant categories are enabled.
- Review background-data access. Check whether the phone restricts WhatsApp from using data in the background. Restore background access if you want push alerts when the app is not open.
- Review battery restrictions. Check whether battery-saving or app-management settings restrict WhatsApp in the background. If they do, adjust them in line with your preferences; the exact controls depend on the phone maker and OS.
- Compare with in-app notifications. If alerts appear while WhatsApp is open but not when it is backgrounded, focus on notification permission, background-data, and battery settings. If neither kind appears, also check WhatsApp’s notification options and the phone’s notification categories.

If only one chat is silent or has no visible alert
Check whether that conversation is muted. WhatsApp says a muted chat will not alert your device to incoming notifications. Open the conversation’s settings in WhatsApp and review its notification or mute status. For group conversations, check the group itself rather than assuming that other WhatsApp chats use the same settings.

Then check system-level notification controls for WhatsApp. Device settings can override choices made inside the app, and a phone may let you silence particular WhatsApp notification categories. Android: check app permissions, categories, and lock-screen privacy
Android’s settings can affect whether an alert appears, whether it makes a sound, and whether its details show on the lock screen. Android Help documents app-level and category controls and notes that steps vary by device.

- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > WhatsApp and check that notifications are allowed. Some Android versions or phone makers use different labels or menu structures.
- If WhatsApp notification categories are listed, check the relevant category. Some versions distinguish Alerting from Silent; a silent category may show a notification without an audible alert.
- If notifications arrive but details are hidden on the lock screen, review the phone’s lock-screen notification and sensitive-content settings. These system privacy controls can hide details independently of Chat Lock.
For steps specific to your Android version and device, consult Google’s Android notification settings help. Phone makers may place or name the same controls differently.

iPhone: check WhatsApp and iPhone notification settings
First review WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications and make sure the in-app options match what you expect. Then open iPhone Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp and check that notifications and your preferred alert types are enabled. Exact labels and available options can differ by iOS version. Because device settings can override in-app choices, changing only WhatsApp’s internal notification options may not be enough.

What Chat Lock does not change about calls
WhatsApp’s Chat Lock guidance says calls from contacts in locked chats are not blocked. A hidden message notification and a call that does not come through are separate issues; do not assume that unlocking a chat will resolve a call problem.
