Android does not run Apple’s Safari browser, and changing your default browser or requesting a desktop site will not turn your browser into Safari. You can still try opening the page directly in an Android browser, choosing a mobile or web option on the site, or adjusting how Chrome displays it.
Why does “Open in Safari” appear on an Android phone?
The prompt can be part of a page, an app-install banner, a redirect, or a website’s browser or device detection. The exact cause depends on the site. Browser detection is one possible explanation, but the prompt alone does not reveal how a particular site produced it. A website may identify a browser from information it provides, yet that does not give an Android browser Safari’s platform-specific capabilities.
Apple’s Universal Links are one example of an Apple-specific app-and-website flow: eligible links can open associated app content on Apple platforms, and when the app is not installed, Apple says the URL opens in the user’s default browser. That background may help explain Apple terminology around a link, but it does not establish that Universal Links caused a prompt on your Android phone. What to try when a site asks you to open it in Safari
- Reload the page. A temporary redirect or stale page embedded in another app may be involved.
- Open the URL in a full browser. If you tapped the link inside another app, use its menu to open it in your Android browser, or copy the URL and paste it into Chrome or another installed browser. Menu wording varies by app.
- Try another Android browser. If the prompt appears in only one browser, tell the site or app’s support team which browser showed it.
- Look for the site’s own alternative. Check for an Android, mobile-site, or “continue on web” option and use it if available.
- Use Chrome’s desktop-site option only if the page layout is the problem. In Chrome, tap More → Desktop site, then refresh. For a persistent preference, go to Chrome Settings → Site settings → Desktop site. A site-specific setting may override the general preference. This asks Chrome for a desktop-style presentation; it does not switch Chrome into Safari. See Google’s instructions for desktop mode on Android.
- Change your default browser only if links open in the wrong app. Go to Android Settings → Apps → Default apps (or Choose default apps) → Browser app, then select an installed browser. Labels vary by Android version and device manufacturer. This controls which app opens ordinary links; it does not change the browser a website asks for. Default browser and desktop mode do different things

When to contact the site—and how to stay safe
If the prompt persists in more than one Android browser and the site offers no Android or web option, the issue may require a change by the site owner or help from that service. Report the page address, your Android browser, and whether the prompt also appears in a second browser. That information can help support distinguish a site issue from an in-app browser issue.
Do not install an app or enter credentials solely because an unfamiliar page tells you to. If the request seems unexpected, navigate to the service’s known website or find its official app listing yourself.
