Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The USB-C shape alone does not guarantee video: many hubs rely on DisplayPort Alternate Mode (Alt Mode) or a compatible Thunderbolt/USB4 display path, then convert that signal to HDMI. If the host port lacks a compatible video mode, changing cables or display settings will not make the hub output video.
Work through the checks below in order, starting with compatibility and the simplest connections before considering a fault or replacement.

1. Confirm that the computer’s USB-C port supports video
Look up the specifications for your exact computer model and the specific USB-C port you are using. Confirm that it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or a display path compatible with your hub. Some computers have USB-C ports with different capabilities, and a port that charges a device or handles data may still lack video output. Microsoft advises checking that the PC, display, and cable support a compatible display mode; HP also specifies DisplayPort Alt Mode support for its Universal USB-C Multiport Hub.
A DisplayPort symbol or lightning-bolt marking can be a useful clue, but the computer maker’s specifications are better confirmation. See Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance and HP’s USB-C hub guidance. If the specifications do not clearly establish video support, ask the computer maker before buying another hub.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
2. Connect the hub directly and use its supplied cable
For diagnosis, connect the hub straight to the computer. Temporarily remove any other hub, dock, extension, or adapter between them. Intermediate devices and multiple connected alternate-mode devices can complicate USB-C behavior.
Use the cable supplied with the hub if it has a detachable host cable. A USB-C cable may support charging or basic data without carrying the display signal the hub needs. If you are considering another cable, check the hub’s requirements rather than choosing by connector shape alone. Microsoft recommends using the device maker’s cable or a certified USB4 cable in relevant USB-C troubleshooting guidance; Plugable likewise specifies the supplied cable for its UD-CA1A.

3. Check the monitor, HDMI input, and cable path
- Turn the monitor on and manually select the HDMI input that the cable uses, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Connect the hub to the monitor with one direct HDMI cable. Remove splitters, converters, and adapters while testing.
- If available, try a known-good HDMI cable or another display. This helps distinguish a cable or monitor problem from a host-to-hub compatibility issue.
Incorrect monitor input selection is a common no-video cause in Plugable’s troubleshooting guidance. Microsoft also recommends trying a different cable when diagnosing display problems. See Plugable’s HDMI video troubleshooting steps and Microsoft’s USB-C guidance.
4. Check resolution, refresh rate, and display limits
If the display is detected but remains blank, flickers, or fails at a particular setting, try a lower resolution or refresh rate. The supported output depends on the hub model and revision, the host computer, the number of connected displays, and their settings. Check the exact hub specifications rather than assuming all USB-C hubs share the same limits.

For example, Plugable says the original USBC-7IN1 supports up to 3840 × 2160 at 30 Hz. Its revised version can reach 60 Hz with a compatible host that supports DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode. Those figures apply to that model and its revisions, not to USB-C hubs generally. Apple also notes that the number of external displays a Mac supports depends on the exact Mac model and connected display settings; see Apple’s guidance on connecting displays to a Mac. Plugable’s product-specific resolution information is at the USBC-7IN1 specifications page.
5. Restart the connection, then check operating-system settings
Disconnect the hub from the computer. If the hub has its own power supply, disconnect that too, then reconnect according to the hub maker’s instructions. For Plugable’s UD-CA1A, the instructions specify waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting power and the host cable; do not assume that timing applies to every model. See Plugable’s model-specific troubleshooting instructions.

On a Mac, open System Settings > Displays and check whether the monitor appears. If it does, review its resolution and refresh rate. On Windows, follow the troubleshooting steps for the specific USB-C or display error and the devices involved. A manufacturer may recommend a driver for a particular problem—ASUS, for instance, recommends an Intel chipset driver in certain USB-C troubleshooting cases—but a driver cannot add video output to a port that lacks the required hardware capability. See Apple’s Mac display instructions and ASUS USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
6. Isolate whether the hub or computer may be faulty
If possible, test the same hub, cable, and display with a computer known to support the hub’s video mode. You can also test the original computer with a known-compatible display connection. If the hub works with another compatible host, investigate the original computer’s port or configuration. If video still fails across compatible hosts and displays, while the hub’s other functions work, the hub or its power source may be at fault. ASUS notes that a dock or its power source can be responsible when a connected USB device works normally but the dock does not.

When contacting support, provide the exact computer, hub, cable, and monitor models, the operating system, and the resolution and refresh rate you are trying to use. Those details let the computer or hub maker check compatibility and model-specific limits.
Should you replace the hub or use a different adapter?
Replace hardware only after confirming that the computer supports video over the port in question and testing a direct connection with a suitable cable. Compare replacement options by their required host mode, supported resolution and refresh rate for your computer and display count, power requirements, and any required driver or software—not by port count alone.
A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode can provide a simpler direct connection when the computer’s port supports that mode. It will not solve a host port with no video output. Apple describes compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapters as a way to connect a Mac to an HDMI display; check the exact adapter and host requirements at Apple’s display connection guidance.
