Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To connect two monitors through one USB-C hub or dock, first confirm that your laptop’s USB-C port supports video and that the laptop can drive two external displays at your monitors’ desired resolution and refresh rate. Connect both monitors to a compatible dock, connect the dock to the laptop, then choose Extend in your display settings. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video support, and a dock cannot exceed the laptop’s display limit.
Check that your laptop can drive two external monitors
Before choosing a hub, look up the exact laptop model and its supported external-display configurations. Check the maximum number of external screens and the resolution and refresh rate supported when two are connected. A laptop may have a USB-C port that carries data and power but not video, or it may support video while limiting the number of external displays.

Check the port and laptop specifications for DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or USB4 video support, and consult the laptop maker’s compatibility guidance. The USB-C connector shape by itself does not establish that the port can send a display signal.

A USB-C dock with display outputs is different from a USB-only hub. DisplayPort’s FAQ explains that a dock supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode can use one USB-C connection to carry charging power, USB data, and audiovisual data for one or more displays. Confirm that the dock explicitly supports video with your laptop and can drive two independent monitors at the resolutions and refresh rates you want.

Match the dock’s outputs to the monitors’ inputs, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C video. Check whether the dock needs its own power supply, whether it provides power to the laptop, and whether it requires drivers or software. The manufacturer’s compatibility information matters: a dock’s listed capability is not a promise that every laptop can use it.
For example, Microsoft documents its Surface USB4 Dock as supporting two external 4K monitors on supported hosts. That is a specification for that dock and compatible systems, not a general capability of USB-C laptops. See Microsoft’s Surface USB4 Dock instructions and compatibility information.

Connect the monitors and select an extended desktop
- Connect each monitor to the dock. Use the dock’s HDMI, DisplayPort, or other supported video outputs and appropriate cables. Power on the monitors and select the input they are connected to.
- Power the dock if required. Some docks need their own power adapter for operation or laptop charging; follow the dock maker’s instructions.
- Connect the dock to the laptop. Use the dock’s host cable and a laptop USB-C port that supports the required video mode.
- Choose Extend in Windows. Press Windows+P and select Extend. To detect or arrange the displays, open Settings > System > Display, use Identify or Detect, and drag the display diagrams to match their physical positions. Microsoft provides current guidance for using multiple monitors in Windows.
- Arrange displays in macOS. Open System Settings > Displays and arrange the connected screens. Apple explains how to connect one or more external displays to your Mac.
Understand the Mac-specific display limit
The number of screens a Mac can use at once depends on its model and the resolution and refresh rate of each display. Apple’s specifications for MacBook Air models with M4 and M5 describe support for up to two external displays for those documented models, with configuration-dependent resolution and refresh-rate limits. Do not apply those figures to other Macs: check the support page for your exact model. A hub can route the video connections, but it cannot raise the Mac’s supported display count.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy two monitors may show the same picture
If both screens mirror one another, check the computer’s display mode and select Extend rather than a duplicate or mirror option. A splitter generally duplicates one video signal; it does not create two independent desktops. Microsoft explains this distinction in its multiple-monitor guidance. Also verify that the dock and laptop together support two independent displays.

Troubleshoot a missing screen or reduced picture quality
- One monitor is not detected: Check that it is powered on and set to the correct input, then reseat its cable at both ends. In Windows, use Settings > System > Display > Detect. On a Mac, review the connected screens in System Settings > Displays.
- Only one external monitor works: Recheck the laptop’s maximum display count and the dock’s support for two displays on that host. A graphics or display adapter may not support additional screens; adding a dock does not remove that limit.
- A screen is dark or runs below its expected resolution or refresh rate: Check that the cable and any adapter support the display mode you selected. Apple notes that an unsuitable cable or adapter can leave an external display dark or restrict its resolution or refresh rate. See Apple’s guidance on connecting a display with a cable or adapter. If possible, remove unnecessary adapters while troubleshooting.
- The displays are arranged incorrectly: Use the display settings to drag their diagrams into the same left-to-right or top-to-bottom arrangement as the physical monitors.
Microsoft’s Windows monitor instructions apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10; Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Use the support and compatibility information for your operating system and hardware when troubleshooting.
