The most useful first checks are whether the exact TV model plays video over USB and whether the file’s container, video codec, and audio codec match that model’s requirements.
What drive recognition does—and doesn’t—tell you
The TV may detect the drive and display its folders while still being unable to play a video stored on it. Some models support USB photos and music but not video playback, according to LG’s USB video troubleshooting guidance. So a TV that sees your USB but won’t play the movie is not necessarily having a drive-recognition problem.

Even when the model supports USB video, it may not support the particular file. A familiar extension such as MP4 does not, by itself, prove that the video and audio streams inside the file are compatible. Check the exact model’s supported formats and compare them with the file’s actual playback information.
Check the TV model’s USB video support
Find the full model number on the TV’s label or in its settings, then open that model’s manual or manufacturer support page. Look for USB media playback requirements, not just a general statement that the TV has a USB port. LG directs users to the specific model guide; TCL likewise advises checking supported video decoding for the model number.

Confirm that the guide lists video playback at all. If the TV’s USB screen offers only photos and music, that can indicate the model does not support video over USB. The port’s ability to recognize storage does not establish that the TV has a compatible video player.
Check the file’s container and codecs
A video file has several compatibility details. Compare all of these with the model-specific supported-format list:

- Container: The file format that packages the streams, often suggested by the filename extension.
- Video codec: The method used to encode the picture.
- Audio codec: The method used to encode the sound.
Manufacturers may list containers and audio and video codecs separately. Sony’s USB playback guide, for example, separates file types from supported codecs and warns that playback of listed formats is not guaranteed. An unsupported codec can prevent playback even if the file extension looks familiar.

Use the one-file-versus-all-files test
Try another video that the TV’s guide identifies as supported. Whether that file plays helps narrow the cause:

These checks narrow the possibilities; without the model number, file details, and error message, they cannot identify the exact cause.

Check storage requirements against the exact model
Once you have confirmed that the TV supports video, check the model’s instructions for the USB filesystem, capacity, and any external-drive power requirements. These are not universal limits. For example, LG’s USB connection guidance gives filesystem, capacity, and power instructions for the devices covered on that page; follow your own TV’s guidance rather than applying those figures to another model.
For the TCL Roku TVs covered by TCL’s USB media support page, a drive that needs more power than the TV can provide may not be detected. If your TV already recognizes the drive, power is a less likely explanation for one video failing than file compatibility, though model-specific storage requirements are still worth checking.

Convert only to a format the TV supports
If the file’s actual codecs do not match the TV’s requirements, making a compatible copy may solve the problem. First use the model guide to identify supported specifications, then choose conversion settings that meet them. There is no reliable universal “TV-ready” preset: support varies by model. LG advises checking file information against the TV’s requirements and encoding unsupported files to meet those specifications.
Keep the original file and test the converted copy. Conversion cannot add USB video playback to a model that does not support it, and it will not resolve a separate storage-device issue.
