A photonic chip processes optical signals using integrated components that guide, shape, switch, and detect light. In a typical communications system, it works alongside electronics: light carries data across an optical link, while electronic circuits provide control, logic, memory, and the electrical interfaces.

What a photonic chip does

A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is a chip containing optical components, much as an electronic integrated circuit contains electrical components. Depending on its design, a PIC may guide light, filter it, switch its path, modulate it to encode data, or detect it. A light source and a detector connect the optical functions to the rest of the system.

The chip does not necessarily perform general-purpose computation. In a data link, its job is to help transmit or receive information optically; in a sensor or research processor, it may perform a different, specifically designed task. The architecture and materials vary with the application.

How information travels through a photonic chip

  1. Generate light. A laser provides an optical carrier. It may be integrated with the photonic chip, bonded to it, or supplied as a separate component. Silicon is useful for guiding light and integrating many optical elements, but it is not an efficient direct light source in the way some other materials are, so source integration is a design consideration.
  2. Encode the data. An electrical data signal drives an optical modulator, which changes a property of the light—such as its intensity, phase, or frequency. Those controlled changes form distinguishable optical states that represent information.
  3. Guide and manipulate the signal. Microscopic waveguides confine light to paths across the chip. Couplers can combine or divide signals; switches direct them; filters and resonators select particular wavelengths. In dense wavelength-division multiplexing, several wavelengths carry separate channels along the same optical path.
  4. Detect the light and hand it off. A photodetector converts received light into an electrical signal. Electronics then handle tasks such as control, logic, memory, and interfaces in a hybrid system. The photonic circuit performs the optical functions for which it was designed.

Where photonic chips are used

Data-center and other communications

One established use is optical communications. Intel describes silicon-photonics PICs with on-chip dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers, integrated with an electronic IC to form an optical I/O subsystem. The company says its PICs are embedded in pluggable transceiver modules deployed by hyperscale cloud providers. This is an example of photonics moving data between equipment—not evidence that a PIC replaces a general-purpose CPU. Intel also reports cumulative shipments since 2016 of more than 8 million PICs and more than 32 million integrated lasers; those are Intel’s company-reported figures, not independently verified industry totals. Intel’s silicon photonics overview.

A fiber-optic transceiver module is a tangible example of this technology in infrastructure. A real module must match the host system and link requirements, including form factor, wavelength, connector, and reach; the existence of silicon photonics alone does not establish compatibility with a particular device.

Optical computing and AI research

Researchers are investigating optical circuits for signal processing, analog matrix operations, neural-network acceleration, and other specialized computing workloads. These are active development areas, not proof that mainstream computers now perform general-purpose calculations with light. Performance claims only make sense when tied to a particular workload, system boundary, baseline, and measurement; the sources available here do not establish a comparable benchmark set against electronic processors. Boston University’s Photonics Center describes photonics research and application areas.

Sensing, imaging, lidar, and other applications

Photonic circuits are also studied or used in areas including lidar, imaging, wireless and radio-frequency signal processing, biomedical or chemical sensing, and quantum information processing. These applications use different architectures and have different levels of maturity. They should not be treated as interchangeable deployments of one standard silicon-photonics chip. Why materials and integration matter

No single material is best for every optical function. Silicon benefits from established semiconductor fabrication infrastructure and can support many passive optical components, but some active functions—especially efficient light generation—may call for other materials or hybrid integration. Silicon nitride, indium phosphide, and thin-film lithium niobate are among the other platforms used or studied; the appropriate choice depends on wavelength, optical loss, required active functions, and how the chip must integrate with electronics.

A 2018 Nature study demonstrated optical waveguides, resonators, high-speed modulators, and avalanche photodetectors using a deposited polycrystalline-silicon layer on oxide islands fabricated alongside transistors. The work used a 65-nanometre CMOS process on a 300-millimetre wafer platform. Those details describe that specific research demonstration, not a standard process node or method used by every commercial PIC. The Nature research paper. What photonics can improve—and what it does not remove

Moving data with multiple optical channels

Optical links can carry high data rates, and wavelength-division multiplexing allows multiple wavelength channels to share a path. That makes photonics especially useful for moving data between servers or other systems. It does not, by itself, show that a processor’s calculations will run faster or use less energy.

Electronics remain part of the system

Practical optical systems still need sources of light, detectors, control circuitry, packaging, and electrical-to-optical and optical-to-electrical handoffs. A photonic chip handles the optical operations built into it; it is not automatically an all-optical computer.

Integration involves trade-offs

Choosing a PIC means balancing the optical platform and wavelength, source integration, component functions, optical loss and tuning needs, electronic interface, packaging, manufacturing approach, and intended workload. A design optimized for communications may not suit sensing or a particular computing operation.

Why a photonic chip is not simply a faster CPU

Light can carry information through an optical link, but that fact alone does not determine how quickly a complete computer finishes a task. A system’s result depends on the operation being performed and on all the surrounding components and interfaces—not just the speed of an optical signal. The available evidence does not provide a unified, comparable benchmark showing that photonic chips outperform electronic processors generally. The clearest established example is photonics used as part of communications infrastructure; computing and AI remain workload-specific areas of development.
