A trading bot can mistake a withdrawal for a trading loss if it calculates daily profit and loss as current equity minus equity at the start of the day. Equity changes when cash enters or leaves an account as well as when trades gain or lose value. A daily loss guard built on that calculation can therefore close positions and stop trading for the day even though the apparent loss came from a transfer.
How the withdrawal triggered the guard
In a first-person DEV Community post, Gary McLaughlin describes a program he wrote that closed every open position on a live trading account and stopped operating for the rest of the day after the account owner withdrew money. The post is labeled AI-assisted; its account and implementation details are McLaughlin’s, not an independently verified incident report.

The guard calculated daily P&L by subtracting day-start equity from current equity. It then compared that result with a daily loss limit. This measures trading performance only when trading is the sole cause of equity changes. A withdrawal lowered equity, so the bot treated the outflow as a trading loss and crossed its threshold. A deposit could cause the opposite mistake: it could look like trading profit and satisfy a profit target.
As McLaughlin puts it, “The baseline and the measurement had silently stopped meaning the same thing.” The underlying defect was semantic: the program treated a measure of current account state as if it were a measure of change caused by trading.

Separate current state from measured change
Current equity is a state
Equity describes the account’s current value. It can change because of trading and because of deposits or withdrawals. A snapshot of equity alone does not identify what caused a movement.
Daily trading P&L is a change with a cause
A daily performance measure is intended to capture trading results over a period, not every movement in account value. When external cash flows can affect the same number, the calculation needs to account for those flows or use a different measure.

This distinction applies beyond trading software. McLaughlin points to a rate-limit counter reset administratively, disk usage whose apparent baseline changes when a volume is mounted, and a progress bar whose denominator changes while work is underway. In each case, a comparison can become misleading when the underlying reference or state changes outside the process being measured.

McLaughlin’s proposed correction is to detect an external cash movement and shift the relevant performance baselines by the same amount. That is intended to keep a deposit or withdrawal from changing the measured trading result by itself. The article’s example includes day-start equity, peak equity, and initial balance; the baselines to adjust depend on which measurements the program actually uses.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Do not apply that normalization indiscriminately. A value used to represent available capital for position sizing should reflect the account’s actual current resources. After a withdrawal, the account has less capital available, and sizing should respond to that reduction. The design question for each stored value is whether it measures change over time or represents current state.
Make transfer detection fit the account and runtime
- Classify account events correctly. McLaughlin’s example says the platform records balance and credit events separately and sketches scanning those record types in MQL5 history. Verify current MQL5 API semantics and the actual broker’s account-history behavior before relying on that classification.
- Inspect history when relevant. The article recommends triggering history inspection when a relevant balance change occurs rather than on every tick, and limiting the query to the current day on the rationale that earlier movements are already reflected in the baseline.
- Reconcile at startup. A transfer can happen while the bot is stopped. If persisted baselines are not reconciled when it starts again, the stale reference can cause the guard to trigger immediately.
- Cover every affected measurement. Adjust all baselines that feed performance measures affected by a transfer, while leaving current-capacity calculations tied to current account state.
- Match simulation to the target environment. McLaughlin suggests disabling transfer-history scans in backtests where no cash transfers occur. That is an assumption about the test setup, not a universal rule; confirm whether the simulation models deposits and withdrawals before disabling the logic.
Validate the behavior before relying on it
McLaughlin proposes checking the behavior on a demo account: record the measured daily result, make a small withdrawal, and confirm that the measured trading result does not change solely because of that movement. He says he had not run this check, and notes that he found the startup/restart issue by reasoning rather than testing. The proposal is a useful validation scenario, not evidence that the correction works in production.

A complete test should also consider deposits, transfers made while the program is stopped, threshold decisions after restart, and whether position sizing still reflects reduced capital after a withdrawal. These checks follow from the two separate responsibilities: preserving a meaningful performance measure and responding to the account’s actual current resources.

Source and scope
The incident and proposed implementation are described in Gary McLaughlin’s first-person post, “The baseline that quietly stopped meaning anything (and closed real trades)”, published on DEV Community on August 30 (the year is not displayed in the article header). The page labels the post AI-assisted. Its MQL5 details are the author’s account and should be checked against current platform documentation and the target broker’s behavior before reuse.
