If a wallet balance appears to change but you cannot find a matching transaction, first check whether you are comparing the same token account, mint, and commitment level. Then inspect transaction history and token-specific instructions: wallet totals can combine accounts, account-change alerts do not identify causes, and transaction balance differences show only a net change.
First distinguish the balance you saw from the on-chain amount
On Solana, a token account stores a mint, an owner, and an amount. One wallet can own multiple token accounts for the same mint, so a wallet interface may display an aggregate rather than the amount in one account. A change in that displayed total does not, by itself, show that a particular account changed.

Start by identifying the mint address, token-account address, owner, and token program. Use getTokenAccountsByOwner to list token accounts associated with an owner, then use getTokenAccountBalance to query a specific account. The associated token account is derived from the owner and mint, but it is not safe to assume it is the owner’s only account for that mint. Solana’s payment verification guide describes account derivation and balance verification.
Check whether the observations are actually comparable
When two tools show different values, compare the exact account address, mint, observation time, and commitment level before concluding that chain state changed without a transaction. Solana RPC and WebSocket reads can use different commitment levels: processed, confirmed, or finalized. They represent different stages of transaction confirmation, so readings made at different levels or times may not match.

The WebSocket method accountSubscribe notifies a client when an account’s lamports or data change. It is a state-change signal, not an explanation: the notification does not identify the instruction or actor responsible. Its options include commitment and account-data encoding. See Solana’s accountSubscribe documentation.
Trace the account’s transaction history
- Retrieve signatures. Query
getSignaturesForAddressfor the token-account address. Solana’s RPC reference documents the method. - Fetch transaction details. For relevant signatures, call
getTransaction. Solana’s RPC reference describes the transaction response and its metadata. - Match the token balance entries. Compare pre- and post-token balances for the account index corresponding to the account you are investigating and confirm the mint. The official payment verification example illustrates checking these metadata fields; it skips transactions where the needed metadata is absent.
- Inspect the instructions if the balance difference is not enough. Review the transaction’s instructions and participating accounts to understand the operations that produced the result.
If a history query returns no relevant entry, that alone does not prove there was no operation. The result may depend on the queried address, search range, or RPC provider’s available data; the documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal history-retention guarantee.

Read balance differences as net changes, not a transaction narrative
A transaction’s pre- and post-token balances show the net change for an account. As Solana’s official transaction metadata guide puts it: “Pre/post balances only show the net change, not individual transfers.” A transaction can contain multiple token instructions, so a single net difference may conceal several movements or other operations. Swaps and batched payments can also involve multiple accounts.
When the net delta does not explain what happened, inspect the transaction instructions and the other participating accounts. A balance difference is useful for locating a change; it is not a complete explanation of the transaction.

Check for token-specific state and wrapped SOL
Solana’s original Token Program and Token-2022 are distinct. Token-2022 supports optional extensions that add state to a mint or token account. Extensions are typically initialized during account creation, and most cannot be added after initialization. If ordinary transaction tracing leaves an unexplained result, identify the mint’s token program and check which extensions it uses. Solana documents the programs and extensions in its token program documentation.
Wrapped SOL is another case worth checking. Its token-account workflow includes a Sync Native operation. Also keep token units separate from SOL-denominated lamports: a token account’s token amount is not the same field as its lamport balance, and rent-exempt reserve information is a separate account property. Solana describes wrapped SOL and token-account behavior in its token documentation.

Choose the right monitoring method
| Need | Approach | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Check an account once | HTTP RPC balance query such as getTokenAccountBalance |
The amount reported for that token account at the selected commitment. |
| Investigate past changes | getSignaturesForAddress followed by getTransaction |
Available signatures and transaction metadata; instructions are needed to understand the operations behind a net delta. |
| Observe account-state changes continuously | WebSocket accountSubscribe |
A notification that the account’s lamports or data changed, not why it changed. |
| Build production monitoring | A robust streaming service or RPC provider | An infrastructure option for applications that need ongoing observation; capabilities and terms vary. |
Solana’s payment verification guide names Alchemy, Triton, Helius, and QuickNode as examples of streaming providers production applications may consider. That list is not a ranking or a comparison of price, uptime, retention, or feature parity. Evaluate a service against your application’s requirements rather than treating the examples as endorsements.
