For ordinary outdoor wood-to-wood joints, Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue is a strong manufacturer-documented option, provided the joint will not be continuously submerged, below the waterline, or used structurally. It is designed for interior and exterior applications and its manufacturer says it passes ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance. Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate is another outdoor-use product with a Type I claim. Neither classification makes a glue suitable for every marine, submerged, or load-bearing job.
Which exterior wood glue should you choose?
Choose for the joint’s actual exposure and purpose, not just a “waterproof” label. For common outdoor woodworking exposed to weather, Titebond III is a defensible starting point; Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate is a comparable manufacturer-listed option. The manufacturers’ specifications support those use cases, but there is no independent head-to-head test here establishing a universal best.

Both products are excluded by their manufacturers for continuous submersion, below-waterline use, and structural or load-bearing applications. For those jobs, follow a project-specific engineered adhesive or fastener specification rather than extrapolating from a water-resistance classification.

What Type I water resistance means
ANSI/HPVA Type I is a water-resistance classification, not a promise that a glued joint can remain underwater. In Titebond’s explanation, both Type I and Type II tests use birch laminates bonded into three-ply panels, but Type I is more stringent.
Titebond’s description of the Type I test
Titebond describes boiling test specimens for four hours, oven-drying them at 145°F for 20 hours, boiling them for another four hours, then cooling and testing shear strength while wet. The test also applies strength and wood-failure requirements.
Rank #2
- Provide a much stronger bond than the wood itself
- Offer excellent heat-resistance and are very easy to sand
- Are water cleanup while still wet
- Provide strong initial tack and a 30-minute clamp time
- Conform to ASTM D4236 – Non-toxic and safe to use
Titebond’s description of the Type II test
For Type II, Titebond describes soaking specimens for four hours, baking them at 120°F for 19 hours, and repeating those cycles three times. The stated requirement is no delamination.

- Proven Type I Waterproof Performance: Passes ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance standards, making it ideal for outdoor woodworking, cutting boards, furniture, and projects exposed to weather conditions.
- Superior Strength & Strong Initial Tack: Advanced proprietary polymer formula delivers exceptional bonding power, fast grab, and a durable long-lasting hold on hardwoods, softwoods, and composites.
- Longer Open Assembly Time: Provides extended working time for complex glue-ups, larger assemblies, and precise alignment—perfect for professional woodworkers and DIY builders.
- Works in Lower Temperatures: Formulated for reliable performance in colder conditions with a low 45°F application threshold, ensuring consistent results year-round.
- Easy Water Cleanup & Interior/Exterior Use: Solvent-free, low-VOC, and cleans up with water; sands easily without softening and remains unaffected by finishes for a clean, professional result.
How to get a reliable outdoor wood joint
Check the joint and exposure first
- Use these products only within the manufacturers’ stated limits; neither is intended for continuous submersion, below-waterline use, or structural/load-bearing work.
- Consider where water can collect and how much weather the joint will face. A classification alone does not specify performance for every exposure or project design.
Work within the product’s temperature and timing guidance
- For Titebond III, the product page lists an 8–10-minute open assembly time at 70°F and 50% relative humidity and advises that the temperature, glue, and materials be above 45°F; its application guidelines list above 47°F.
- For Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate, the listed minimum application temperature is 50°F, with up to 15 minutes working time. Gorilla lists a 20–30-minute clamp time and 24 hours to full cure.
- Check the current product label and instructions before use because product specifications can change.
Fit and clamp the joint properly
Gorilla says its glue does not fill gaps, so do not rely on it to compensate for a poorly fitting joint. Titebond advises applying enough clamping pressure to bring the joint tightly together and gives general pressure ranges based on wood hardness. It permits application with a brush or roller spreader. For Titebond, wipe wet excess with a damp cloth; scrape and sand dried excess.

Do not treat Type I as a substitute for an adhesive specified for underwater or below-waterline service, or for an engineered structural connection. Both manufacturers expressly exclude those uses. Select materials and fastening methods against the requirements of the particular project, and use a qualified specification where failure could affect safety or carry a load.
