Repeated buffering means the radio is not receiving audio data steadily enough to keep playback going. The cause may be weak Wi-Fi where the radio sits, competing use of a shared internet connection, a problem with one station’s stream, or the radio itself. The radio’s small size does not identify the cause. Compare stations, devices, and locations before buying equipment.
What buffering means
A streaming player stores some incoming audio data in a buffer so brief network interruptions do not immediately stop playback. If data arrives too slowly—or the connection drops—the player can run out of stored audio and pause while it refills. Buffering is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. Find out whether the problem is the station, Wi-Fi, or internet connection
Use these comparisons to narrow the likely cause. Radio menus and station catalogs vary, so use whatever station-selection options your model provides.

These are clues, not conclusive tests: a speed test or a single playback attempt captures conditions at one moment. Try these low-risk fixes in order
- Switch stations. Test a different station on the radio, then try the affected station on another device if possible. This separates a single-stream problem from one affecting the radio or connection.
- Pause competing network activity. Temporarily stop large downloads or other bandwidth-heavy use and compare playback. Streaming quality can suffer when available bandwidth is limited or varies as people and devices share a connection. Infomaniak notes that sufficient bandwidth and spare capacity matter; a dedicated internet connection is not a universal requirement.
- Test Wi-Fi coverage at the radio. If practical, move the radio closer to the router or reduce obstacles between them. Leave it there long enough to compare playback. Placement and barriers can affect wireless stability, as Teufel’s guidance on interruptions explains.
- Restart if the connection seems broadly slow. Buffalo Toronto Public Media recommends restarting the device or router when the connection is slower than usual. Follow the instructions for your particular radio and router; restart and reset procedures differ by model. Do not assume that a factory reset is necessary.
- Escalate according to what the comparisons show. If multiple devices and services are affected, ask your internet provider to check the connection. If one station fails across devices while other streams work, contact the station or streaming service. If only the radio continues to fail despite an otherwise working network, consult the manufacturer and the manual for that model. A radio manual hosted in an FCC filing mirror advises contacting the broadband supplier for line errors or disconnections; its product identity is not established here, so use it as model-specific guidance rather than a universal procedure.
When an extender or access point makes sense
A Wi-Fi extender or access point is worth considering when the radio’s playback improves nearer the router, but the radio cannot reasonably stay there and the router cannot be moved. Teufel describes repeaters as a way to extend signal coverage and discusses access points in a streaming setup in its RADIO 3SIXTY support guidance. Before choosing one, check that your radio supports the proposed network arrangement and consult its manual for documented Wi-Fi bands and connection options. No particular brand or model is established as a fit for every radio.
An extender addresses coverage, not every cause of buffering. It will not resolve a station outage, a broadband-line fault, congestion on a shared connection, a router or provider problem, or a defective radio. If the evidence points to one of those instead, adding an extender may not change playback.

Could a longer buffer help?
Some players offer a setting that waits longer before starting playback. TuneIn documents a “Buffer Before Play” option in its buffering support article. This is a TuneIn setting, not a feature every internet radio has. Where available, a longer buffer may mask brief interruptions, but it cannot repair an unstable network or fix a station that is unavailable.
