A click or visible spark alone does not identify the cause. Stop if the lighter leaks or keeps hissing, and seek manufacturer service rather than opening its fuel system.
Start with the lighter’s type and manual
These checks are for refillable butane lighters, especially torch and cigar models. They are not a universal procedure for disposable lighters, utility lighters, or specialty designs. Confirm the model and consult its manual before adjusting, refilling, or cleaning it; the maker’s instructions determine which steps are permitted.

A click does not prove that fuel is reaching the burner, and a visible spark does not prove that it is positioned correctly to ignite fuel. Several faults can produce similar symptoms, so work through only the checks approved for your lighter.
Check the fuel and flame setting
A low fuel level or a flame adjustment set very low can result in a weak or absent flame. Check the fuel window or indicator, if the model has one, and use only the flame adjustment provided by the manufacturer. Do not force a control or assume the same adjustment method applies to every lighter.

If the lighter needs a refill, use a can and nozzle compatible with the lighter’s stated fuel requirements and follow both products’ instructions. Colibri recommends its premium butane for its lighters and cautions that contamination or unsuitable pressure can clog the feed system; that recommendation is specific to Colibri, not a universal requirement for every brand. If the lighter was recently refilled
Do not add more fuel automatically. First check the exact refill procedure in the model manual. Colibri’s instructions illustrate why procedures should not be generalized: they call for refilling or emptying in a well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, and flame; purging air from the tank before filling; holding the lighter upside down during refill; and waiting two minutes before attempting ignition. Colibri specifies pressing the refill-can nozzle for 4 to 5 seconds and describes an approximate maximum liquid fill of 85%, with a small air bubble remaining in the viewing window. Those figures apply to its stated procedure; do not use them as targets for another maker’s lighter. If you hear hissing after filling, do not try to light it: Colibri directs users to return a hissing lighter for service.
Check for burner debris only as the maker directs
Debris at the burner can interfere with fuel flow or ignition. Use compressed air only if the manufacturer permits it, and follow that model’s specified pressure, distance, and burst pattern. Do not poke the jet or insert tools into the burner.

- Colibri: Its instructions recommend three short bursts of compressed air, with the can tip at least 1 inch from the burner. Colibri lighter-care instructions.
- XIKAR: Its guidance for applicable jet burners calls for low-pressure air in short bursts of 1 to 2 seconds, for 2 to 3 bursts. Where its instructions permit alcohol to remove residue, let the area dry for 2 to 3 minutes and never ignite the lighter while it is wet. XIKAR lighter care.
These cleaning directions differ, so do not combine them or apply either one to a model whose instructions do not allow it.

Do not use a lighter that leaks or continues to hiss, and do not test for a spark while fuel is flowing. Colibri specifically warns against ignition during refilling or emptying and says a lighter that hisses after filling should be returned for service. A continuing fuel release can create a fire hazard; historical U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission material discusses the danger of fuel continuing to flow after a flame goes out in a multipurpose lighter, but it is not a repair guide. If the approved checks do not resolve the problem, contact the lighter’s manufacturer or a qualified repair service for the exact model. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal replacement jet, igniter, or home repair procedure.
