A padlock on a PS5 game means the console can’t currently confirm you’re entitled to play it. The cause is usually one of five things: the wrong account, a lapsed or insufficient Plus membership, a catalog title that is no longer available, a console-sharing setting that is off, or a license or network hiccup. A game that has vanished from your library is a different problem, and it calls for purchase-history and hidden-game checks. Work through the steps below in order, because the early ones are quick and the later ones are more disruptive.
First, sort out which problem you have
| What you see | Most likely area | Start at |
|---|---|---|
| Padlock on a game tile | License, subscription, sharing or network check | Steps 1, 2, 4, 5 |
| Padlock covering the whole tile image | Possibly a family restriction (per one regional Sony support article) | Step 7 |
| Game absent from the Game Library | Purchase not completed, hidden game, or not a purchase at all | Step 3 |
| Catalog game gone from the catalog | Availability or plan, not a library error | Step 1 |
The padlock alone doesn’t point to one cause. Sony’s guidance lists both network and license problems among the possible reasons, so diagnose before you try fixes.

Step 1: Confirm the account and what kind of “Plus game” it is
Sign in with the account that bought or claimed the game. A Plus subscription and its game benefits belong to the subscribing account. Then identify which benefit the game came from, because they behave differently:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Purchased game: open the purchasing account’s transaction history and confirm the purchase completed.
- Claimed monthly game: it needs an active subscription on the account that claimed it.
- Game Catalog title: it needs a membership plan that includes the catalog, and the title must still be available in your region. Don’t assume a catalog game stays accessible indefinitely.
Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page describes the tiered plans, and its Game Catalog guide covers plan requirements and access on PS5 and PS4. Plans, titles and regional benefits change, so check your regional Sony page for current details.

Step 2: Check Console Sharing and Offline Play if someone else owns the game
If another account on your PS5 owns the game or holds the Plus membership, that owner’s account must have sharing turned on for this console:
- Sign in to the owner’s account on the PS5.
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Enable it.
Per Sony’s Console Sharing guide, this can be active on only one PS5 at a time. If the owner enabled it on another console, disable it there first. It lets other users on the console play the owner’s downloaded games and media, including offline, and use some Plus benefits. It does not share the whole subscription, so some benefits may still need your own membership.
Step 3: If the game is missing, check history and hidden games
- Open the transaction history of the account that should have bought it and confirm the purchase went through.
- Purchased Store games should appear in the Game Library. Per Sony’s download troubleshooting guide, check for hidden games if a purchase doesn’t show. Hidden games are hidden across consoles.
- Verify console sharing (Step 2), then restore licenses (Step 4).
A game missing from a subscription catalog is not a library error. Catalog availability and purchase ownership are separate questions.

Step 4: Restore licenses
Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, run it, then try the game again. Sony also offers a per-game restore option through the Options button on the game’s tile in the library. Sony says this can help with a padlock, a game or add-on that can’t be found, or a crashing game, and states: “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.” (Sony’s license guide, UAE page.)
Limits matter here. Restoring licenses does not renew an expired Plus subscription, and it does not bring back a game that has left the catalog. Sony’s guide says a padlock fixed by license restoration is a different matter from Plus expiry, so check both the entitlement and the license.

- Check PlayStation Network’s service status page for an outage or alert. If one is reported, wait for recovery.
- Install the latest PS5 system software, then restart the console.
If you play catalog games by streaming, Sony’s guidance gives 5 Mbps as the minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p where supported (PlayStation Support, accessed 2026). Those figures concern streaming quality, not license checks or ordinary downloads. No new hardware is needed for any step here.

Step 6: Rebuild the database in Safe Mode
Only after the account, plan, availability, sharing, status and software checks come out clean, try Sony’s later-stage step. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, which recreates the console’s content database. It addresses console-side faults, not missing ownership.

Step 7: Look at family restrictions
A regional Sony support article says that if the padlock covers the whole game image, a Family Manager can amend the restriction. Ask the Family Manager to review parental controls for the child account. Treat this as a hint, not a universal rule, since it comes from one regional page and may not apply in every region or account type.
