Why a PCIe 5.0 SSD Runs Slower Than Its Advertised Speed

A PCIe 5.0 label does not guarantee every benchmark or file copy will hit the advertised peak. Check the slot, active link, temperature, and test type.

A PCIe 5.0 SSD’s advertised “up to” speed is a peak sequential result, not a promise that every computer or file transfer will reach it. The most useful first checks are whether the drive is in a compatible M.2 slot, what PCIe link it negotiates under load, and whether the comparison is a short sequential benchmark or a sustained write or file copy.

Check the setup before judging the drive

  1. Identify the exact SSD model and capacity. Advertised figures and sustained-write behavior can vary by model and capacity, so use the specification for the drive actually installed.
  2. Check the motherboard manual for the M.2 slot. Confirm its PCIe generation, lane width, and any resource-sharing conditions. Slots on the same motherboard may not have the same capabilities. SanDisk’s support guidance says the host must support PCIe Gen 5 NVMe M.2 for the drive to reach its stated maximum, and its Gen 5 brief notes that slot support can differ: SanDisk support and SanDisk Gen 5 solution brief.
  3. Inspect the negotiated PCIe link while the SSD is under load. Use a system utility appropriate for your operating system and hardware; there is no single utility or BIOS menu path that applies to every computer. Compare both generation and lane width with the slot’s documented capability.
  4. Choose a comparable test. Compare sequential read with sequential read and sequential write with sequential write. Note the test size, drive state, cooling, and queue or thread settings. A random-access IOPS result is not comparable to a sequential MB/s specification.
  5. Record temperature during the slowdown. A drive’s idle temperature may not reveal what happens in a long transfer. Check the SSD’s reported temperature during the workload that produces the drop.
  6. Separate a short benchmark from a long write or file copy. They measure different conditions and should not be expected to produce the same rate.

Do not conclude that the SSD is defective until you have compared results under sufficiently similar conditions. A Samsung 9100 Pro review reported an initially lower sequential-read result that changed after testing on different hardware, illustrating how test configuration can affect a result: Tom’s Hardware’s Samsung 9100 Pro review.

Why the measured speed can be lower

The slot or host is limiting the link

A Gen 5 label on the SSD does not make every M.2 socket in a computer a Gen 5 socket. The host and the particular slot must support the needed interface and lane width. Use the motherboard manual to confirm the slot’s capabilities and sharing rules, then check the active link rather than relying on the drive label alone. SanDisk’s advice to verify host support is specific to its SN8100 support page, but the compatibility check is useful more broadly.

PCIe bandwidth is not an SSD speed guarantee

The PCIe link carries data between components; its theoretical bandwidth is not the same thing as a drive benchmark result. Intel explains that PCIe rates are theoretical before encoding overhead and that realized speeds can be lower: Intel’s PCIe explainer. A SanDisk 2025 solution brief gives 16 GB/s as the theoretical maximum bandwidth of a typical four-lane M.2 Gen 5 interface. That is an interface figure, not a guaranteed SSD read or write result. Keep units consistent, too: GB/s and MB/s differ by a factor of 1,000 in decimal units.

Heat can reduce sustained performance

Some NVMe SSDs temporarily reduce sustained performance when they become hot and then recover as they cool. Seagate describes this behavior in its NVMe support guidance: Seagate on thermal throttling. Check the temperature during the same sustained task that causes the drop, and verify that any thermal pad makes contact and the heatsink is correctly fitted. Do not assume a motherboard heatsink is making good contact simply because it is installed: Tom’s Hardware reported that only 6 of 20 motherboard heatsinks in its 2026 test made full contact. That sample does not establish the contact quality of any particular board.

A heatsink is worth considering only if temperature is shown to be a limitation and the current cooling solution is absent or incorrectly fitted. Before buying one, check whether the motherboard already has a heatsink, the SSD’s dimensions, and whether the pad and cover fit correctly. The available evidence does not establish a speed gain for any particular heatsink.

A long write may not sustain the short-test peak

A short sequential test does not show how quickly a drive will write an entire large file or a large volume of data. Some SSDs use write-cache behavior that affects longer transfers; the cache behavior and speed after it is exhausted depend on the exact model, capacity, firmware, free space, and test conditions. Consult documentation for your specific drive or use a controlled test. There is no supported universal cache size or post-cache write speed for PCIe 5.0 SSDs.

A file copy measures more than the destination SSD

A real copy depends on the source drive, destination drive, file sizes and mix, filesystem, and operating system as well as the SSD being evaluated. Many small files can behave differently from one large sequential file. A copy rate is useful for assessing that workflow, but it is not a direct test of the drive’s peak sequential speed.

Compare the right measurements

What you are comparing What to check
Advertised sequential read vs. measured sequential read Use a sequential-read test and note its size, settings, drive state, and cooling.
Advertised sequential write vs. a long write Distinguish a short peak result from sustained throughput; use model- and capacity-specific information where available.
Expected Gen 5 operation vs. active link Verify the slot’s generation and lane width in the motherboard manual, then inspect the negotiated link under load.
Short benchmark vs. sustained workload Record the test duration and drive temperature; the results describe different operating conditions.
Benchmark vs. file copy For a copy, account for both drives, file mix, filesystem, and operating system rather than treating the result as an SSD peak test.

When to suspect a drive problem

A low result alone does not identify a faulty SSD. A stronger basis for troubleshooting is a repeatable shortfall in a comparable sequential test after confirming that the drive is in a suitable slot, the active link is as expected, the test settings are recorded, and temperature is not limiting performance. If the result remains unexpected, compare it with the exact model and capacity’s published specifications and check the drive’s firmware and manufacturer guidance. A targeted diagnosis also needs the motherboard and CPU models, drive model and capacity, operating system, benchmark and settings, active link, and temperature during the test.
