If a device or service says your password may be compromised, verify the warning through a trusted route and change the password if the alert is credible. The notice does not automatically mean that the account named in the alert was breached: the password may have appeared in exposed data from another site, the service may be advising caution after a breach, or the warning itself may be a phishing attempt.
What a password-change warning can mean
There are several different reasons you might be asked to change a password. The distinction matters because a warning is a useful signal to check, not proof by itself that a particular account was taken over.

Your password may have been exposed
A service might have evidence that credentials were exposed in a breach. If the password is one you use only for that service, change it there through the service’s official account settings.

A device or service can compare a password against collections of previously exposed passwords. A match means the string is known to attackers; it does not establish that the service showing the alert suffered a breach, or that someone accessed your account there. If you reused that password, however, attackers may try it on other accounts. NIST explains that using distinct passwords helps reduce the risk of password-stuffing attacks, in which a password exposed at one site is tried at other sites. NIST’s Digital Identity Guidelines FAQ discusses this guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
The warning may be precautionary or fake
A service may recommend a change after a breach without knowing whether your particular password was exposed. A fraudulent email may also imitate a security alert and direct you to a fake sign-in page. Treat an unexpected message as a reason to check your account independently, not as a link to follow.
How to respond safely
- Go to the service independently. Type its known web address or use a saved bookmark. Do not sign in through a link in an unexpected email.
- Check the account’s own security notices. If the service confirms the warning or offers a password-change process, use that process in the account itself.
- Replace the password with a distinct one. Do not reuse the new password on other services. A password manager can help you create and keep track of different passwords; NIST supports password-manager use and distinct passwords in its guidance at NIST SP 800-63B-4.
- Change it on every other account where you reused it. A password exposed in one place can put other accounts at risk if they use the same credentials.
Why routine password changes are different
A credible compromise warning is a reason to change a password; changing every password on an arbitrary calendar is a different policy. NIST SP 800-63B-4 says: “Verifiers and CSPs SHALL NOT require subscribers to change passwords periodically. However, verifiers SHALL force a change if there is evidence that the authenticator has been compromised.” This is guidance for organizations that verify logins, but it captures the practical distinction for users: respond to evidence of compromise rather than relying on routine expiration as a security measure. Read the NIST standard.

What a password change does—and does not—protect against
A new, unique password helps prevent someone from using an exposed old password against that account. It does not make password sign-in resistant to phishing: NIST notes that passwords themselves are not phishing-resistant. Where an account offers stronger authentication, such as a hardware authenticator, that can provide an additional layer of protection. It is optional extra protection, not a substitute for changing a password that may have been compromised. NIST describes authenticator options in SP 800-63B-4.
